Depends. Are the files high-quality MP3s? You say DRM free... that better be true. Am I forced to use some proprietary program, or can I keep using bit torrent, limewire etc?

Hmm... then I'd probably support it. I actually still buy a lot of music on CDs, because 1) I like having the physical copy, the album art etc 2) I can choose what type of file, what quality to rip it in 3) No DRM

Same here. I like to support my favorite artists and if I'm bored I stream music off of Pandora.com for a change of pace.

I download maybe one MP3 every few months. If I like it, I buy the album. If not, it doesn't take up my space very long. The music industry has no business butting into telecommunications when not all customers even use the services they want to surcharge for.

Besides which, Apple would be pissed off.

I believe you pay a small tax which is distributed amongst artists and this means that allow downloading of music is legal.

Canadians may soon pay a small tax on every legal music store download, says a new measure (PDF) sanctioned by the Copyright Board of Canada. Requested by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), the tax would apply at least 2.1 cents to every individual song download and 1.5 cents per track for complete albums. Subscription download and streaming services would themselves be charged between 5.7 and 6.8 percent of a user's monthly fees. Minimum fees would also apply for every larger download or subscription.

There is also this, but its old as hell.

Canada's copyright agency has OK'd the downloading of copyrighted music from Peer to Peer networks - for now, at least - slapping a small tax onto MP3 music players. The Copyright Board of Canada declined to extend existing levies on blank audio and CD recordable media to DVD recordables, or to removable memory, such as Compact Flash or MMC cards.

That's not the point at all. The logic you propose is so fundamentally flawed that it's just sad. Maybe you should just be honest and say you are too cheap to actually buy your music?

Apply that same logic to anything else in life. Walmart doesn't need more money, so it would be OK to not pay them. The supermarket doesn't need more money, so it would be OK to not pay them. Similarly, what if your employer decided that you did not need more money? I bet you wouldn't be happy at all.

I think the second one is what I meant. I don't really know the specifics; just that there are rumours on the internets that in Canuckistan you pay a tax; not sure if everyone pays this or just on the purchase of certain products, and this goes to artists and so people can legally download music.
