bit out of touch, but i've come up with the following for my upgrade:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz
Asus P5K-E WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express
Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR2 PC2-6400 memory module
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB

can the experts tell me if its balanced or if there are better alternatives for a similar budget (£500 max).

That's alright. If you don't need a quad core, however, go for an E8400 oder E8200 and OC them to 4GHz with a decent CPU cooler

I don't come here a lot anymore.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
