Well the question is guys, should i upgrade to a E8400 for $264 AUD. Is the extra performance small/large.

Current rig.
E6300 @ 2.8Ghz
88GTS 512Mb
Giga P35-ds4
2Gb Corsair 6400

The E8400 has 6Mb of L2 cache and is @ 3.0Ghz, compared to the E6300 with 2Mb of cache.

Does this make much difference?
Main use is games, crysis etc.

Thanks fella's.

ehhhh. there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. overclock the CPU a bit more and it will do just fine.

Maybe more RAM but other than that, I don't see anything wrong with your rig.

XP home won't see 4GB but XP Pro will - last I heard anyway.

And my green text is quite noticeable.  Wait...what?

Benchmarks
and another here

You might be able to get a bit more power from your 6300 (my 4300 is running at 3GHZ) but an 8400 can go a lot higher than that, 4GHZ isn't uncommon.

On the other hand, it's not a huge step forward. I don't know anything about future intel releases but it might be worth waiting for the next generation.

I WANNA BE ON THE GOD DAMN TECH TEAM!!!
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Alright might hold off on the cpu and push this one a bit further. Anyone running 3Gb of RAM in XP? How does it compare to 2Gb. Thanks tech gods

I just bought a new E2180. That CPU will have some tough time with me haha... Because it is so cheap cpu, I can push it to the max with ridiculous vcore without too much worries of frying it...

Freezer has quite the mod history. Technical knowledge is not the only basis for getting on the team.

Back on topic now kids.

Oh and, as for the original question - yep, if you've got the money, an E8400 shits all over an E6300 - that extra cache DOES make a difference.

(and I'd rather see freezer on the tech team than killer /2cents)

That is your opinion but I am quite capable of giving sound advice.  I have experience in many different areas.  I'll leave it at that.

Anyway, back on topic.
