The worst thing is, if you were to defend yourself against those people, you could be sued for it. But no matter what, they can just drive off and never be seen again. From the moment they decided to mug your friend, he either had defend himself which would mean he could end up losing big time from a legal perspective, if he even survived, or to take the chance of giving them the money/trying to run, thus taking the chance of getting shot anyhow. It is extremely fucked up how it can work like that

no, the law here is you could have turned their heads into canoes, went to jail for the night probably, then be done with it.

in that situation, i dont really think anyone could have done anything about it. even if HE had a gun, there would have been no way to draw it (from a concealed spot), acquire the target, trigger squeeze, rinse and repeat, without getting shot anyway.

Wow, thats really unlucky to see two people die like that, especially the first. That first one would disturb me much more than the second one if I was to be honest.

So far in life I've been lucky in delaying the inevitable and haven't yet had anyone physically near me die.

Ive never, but my dad's neighbor died from a massive heart attack, and my dad was the first one there.

You're damn lucky you weren't in Chicago, or you'd have been hassled a lot more by the police (they'd arrest you before checking to see if your gun had been recently fired)

Grandad was ill for about a year with cancer. Tried to help my granny look after him and do a full time job at the time but got fired as was off so much.

Nurse came to help me put him in bed one night as he couldn't move, and gave him some form of morphine to help him sleep. Went into check on him about an hour after she left and he had passed away. That was only time seen anyone dead. Was horrible = /

Even worse having to to tell me Dad, Granny and Uncle.

Also sorry to hear about that Parker. That has got to screw you up.

You too 1927, and everyone else that posted.

Parker, wow.  I've spent a lot of time in St Louis, luckily never witnessed anything like that.  Definitely seen some robberies and shootings in Chicago, but never had to actually stay through the aftermath and see the shittyness.

I guess if anything, I take the notion that life is so fragile, and you gotta give your loved ones the validation of love you have for them.  I mean, it sounds cheesy, but it's so true.  Plan as if you'll live forever, Live as if you'll die tomorrow.

1927:  I don't know if I'd have the strength to see my mother like that, much love to ya.

I haven't, but my brother has.

My brother and I used to work in a liquor store right around the Christmas and New Year season.  Two years ago, I had the day off, but he was working and talking to one of the other employees, an old guy named Roy.  He was the quintessential 'dirty old man' who liked to play tricks on people.  He and my brother were walking down the vodka aisle, and he just stopped talking mid sentence, and started to fall over.  My brother thought he was kidding and caught him, but when Roy was limp he knew something was wrong.  So he called for help, but it was too late.  The worst part was, customers were practically ramming their carts into people so they could see what was going on and buy their goddamn vodka.  Nevermind the medical emergency, they needed to get booze and to gawk.  Sickening.

We used to rent a shop in Salt Lake City. The live in manager was three doors down from our unit, so we always felt like our stuff was secure.

I remember him locking the gate behind us.
He was brutally beaten to death that night and we couldn't get our work rig the next day. The two teenagers who did it didn't know he was one of the few openly gay people in our corner of Salt Lake. The got $15.00.

Other than a few dead motorcyclist on the freeway, that's all I got.

That sucks, big time.  However, what happened, happened.  You will never be able to change it, so don't burden yourself by playing "what if."  The situation was unpredictable and sudden, no one will ever be able to provide a real answer as to what would have happened if you had been out there.  I know that probably isn't a comfort, but playing "what if" just leads to more pain.

The closest I've come to something like this, was losing a friend at the NIU shooting.  I was 900 miles away at the time, so the immediacy and experience wasn't the same, by a long shot...thank God.  Even so, it still sucks beyond most comprehension to lose a friend for no reason or something so trivial as a wallet.

Sorry, Parker.  I really don't know what to say other than I'm glad you are OK and that you have my sincerest sympathies.

Righty O

This is not a thread about gun control and neither is it posted in the DST section - this is the recollection of a tragic event experienced by one of the members on the forum - please have the decency to debate the surrounding issue elsewhere.

Next reported personal attack or spam attempt in this thread gets a 3 day vacation ...

Thank you for listening ...

Glad it was not you dude. Even tho most people dont deserve to die....im still glad that the "Beardy knife making dude" is still alive.

As it was previously stated...dont do the 'what if' game. Youll just hurt yourself. May you get over that soon dude.

P.s (Thanks to the mod who remove that tasteless spam that have been made here.)

That's got to suck dude. I'm feeling for you.

I remember at work one day (Debenhams, about 2 years ago) I was on my department (Furniture) and a little old lady came up and sat down in one of the chairs. I asked her if she needed any help, she replied "I'm alright for now thank you dearie" so i left her to it and went and got on with some paperwork. 10 minutes later I notice she's still there so I go over to check on her. She's just sitting there, dead. It was real weird and kinda spooky. I'd just spoken to this lady and now she's sitting there, all peaceful looking, like she was just dozing off.

I felt a bit sad, but I think it wasn't too bad because she looked so content and relaxed. She obviously departed happily and pain-free.

Loosing sleep after an incident like this is perfectly normal, if such a thing doesn't affect you in any way you are not human ... the syndrom is somewhat similar to what soldiers experience after combat and will raise thoughts about what if it was me or a family member - only experience with such events can delay the effect but you seldom don't get rid of it entirely.

The positive side however if one can look at it as positive in the midst of it is you get a slightly different view of life in general and learns to appriciate it more atleast for limited period of time ...
