Has anyone struggled with the microphone ports with this card, and know how to correct them?  First, the optical port in the back doesn't seem to want to recognize the microphone ... I'm using the front port, but I have to open the "Audio Creation Mode", and toggle the line-in / microphone settings to get it to turn on the microphone.  Inconvenient, but it works ... I am wondering if there is a way to not have to do this toggling.

Headset is a Sennheiser.

And, yes I tried updating drivers.  It didn't correct the problem, and added BSODs when switching between modes.  So, I've regressed back to the drivers that came with the card.

The X-Fi cards have been plagued with problems since day one.  I have the very same problem as you but I can get my Mic to work.  The other 2 ports don't work for me at all.  I have no clue why not.  I am also running the latest drivers on Vista.  To be honest I am very close to scraping all my creative cards in favor of ASUS cards.

I recently got the card, without the front panel. The card wasn't even recognized with the drivers out of the box, so I would be very wary of those. The ones on the site worked for me, I assume you're on XP?

Did you go into the mixer on game mode and change the port from the optical to a microphone port? I'm pretty sure you have to select the right type or the mic won't pic up in windows.

The FlexiJack radio buttons are not selectable ... grayed out.

Yeah, that's what I show ... I have microphone selected.  I was talking about the "settings" button at the bottom.   On it, my FlexiJack is grayed out.

Edit:  I was reading somewhere that the flexijack is disabled if the front panel connectors are used.  Hmmm ...

xfi cards are epic fail tbh, i regret paying $120 for mine (a yearago++)... i couldnt even set the shit on xfi in BF or else this shit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo1qHyWegZ4 would happen after a few minutes playing... so i have to use hardware settings instead of xfi settings... so i could of gotten away with just buying some cheap as fucking $30 card instead of this failcard

Ah, I see. Well at least you know what to test to see if that is true or not.

The game mode is behaving the same way.  I have to toggle line-in and microphone in order to get the microphone to activate.

Overall, I've not thought that the sound from the X-Fi is much greater than on-board audio, but I'm not an audio snob.  I got it based on the claims of how much it would off load processing and help with lag.  Well, it didn't help a bit and now I have this microphone annoyance.

So, yeah at this point, I wouldn't recommend an X-Fi to anyone.

Well try unplugging the front panel.

Also, driver updates.

Actually I want my front panel ... and, if you read above, I had BSOD's with their latest driver (took me 2 hours to recover control over my PC).

Just do some troubleshooting to see if the front panel is really the problem, so you know exactly what you are working on fixing.

I know the drivers gave you BSODS, but I really think you need to try getting them on. Did you uninstall the old drivers first? I saw some people had that problem when installing updated drivers with BSODs.

If you have Vista then your X-Fi card is garbage. Most of the enhanced features on the card are disabled by Vista because of the premium content bullshit, and the rest probably won't work correctly anyway. Didn't any of you read the news about how Creative was purposely not releasing quality drivers or putting forth any effort into making new ones until they con more people into to buying them? If you're running XP then you X-Fi is going to be the best. I've never had a problem with mine and it puts all the other sound cards I've ever had to shame.

If you have vista go to the creative forums and look for drivers created by Daniel_k or something like that.  His drivers unlock the disabled features for the x-fi card in vista.  I do not have vista so I can not confirm this, but it is what i have heard.
