Can anyone give me a rundown of the new AMD proccesors such as the X3's and X4's? I've fallen a bit behind and all i need is an overview whats compatible with what and so on. Some of the X3's and X4's are 2.2ghz and the older 5000's are 2.6 so whats the story behind that?

The number next to the X is the number of cores. AMD introduced tri-core (X3) processors based off of the Phenom quad cores (X4). They are the same, except with one core disabled. The architecture in these processors is named Barcelona, and it differs from the X2s.

X2s are obviously the Athlon dual-cores we all know and love.

X3 and X4 are socket AM2+, which also works with standard socket AM2 (although supposedly with a 5% performance decrease). X2s work in Socket AM2.

The clock speeds are different because of the different core architecture and presence of more cores in the X3 and X4. You should be able to google Phenom X3 or Phenom X4 and quickly find a review detailing the performance differences is various applications.

Oh, no.

I forgot to mention that.

Phenom 9x00s have B2 stepping, which sucks and has a bug.

Get a Phenom 9x50 Phenom 9550.

The processor is over 200 by its self and need an overpriced motherboard. 8450 which is a 3x and you will also need a am2+ mother board. Get one in the 100$ range and sell your old stuff.

Do you really need a quad core? Look into the 45nm intel dual-cores

AMD is not the way to go at the moment. They will propably get back later this year, or next year, but Intel is the way to go right now. If you want something that'll last you a while, get a Q6600 or Q6700 (Now when they're down to decent prices), or maybe an E8200/E8400/E8500. They will give you better price/performace than the Phenoms, and they're not as hot either.

No matter if you're used to AMD or not, you've gotta be able to adapt to the market. AMD had their gold age before the Cc2D, with Pentium 4s and Pentium Ds on Intels side, and their supreme Athlon XPs and Athlon 64s on their side. Now, however, Intel has got the upper hand with supreme processors to very competitive prices. AMD tried to get back with the Phenoms, but they just didn't make it. If AMD is able to get out a new, even more effective architecture before Intel, and it proves to be supreme to Intel's opposing generation, then we'll get to look at AMD again.

But for now, Intel is supreme, and the certain way to go.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

A newer quad core Yorkfield Intel CPU is only about $80 more than the Q6600 if you want to marginally save more power.
