changing everything except PSU, GFX card & hard drive (going to reuse as a slave for for future backups.)

i'm going to use ntbackup to save as much of my existing settings & files as possible, i'm also going to take a screen shot of all the software i've currently got installed.

just wondered if you had any advice.

well XP64 cost me £100 about a year before Vista was released, so i'd prefer to reuse in spite of DX10.

no the mobo (P5K-PRO), CPU (Q6600), RAM (corsair) & hard drive (seagate) will all be changed.

So you are already decided on what you will get? I would go for a WD or Samsung HDD and a fast PC 8500 memory. If you play games a lot get a dual core.

i've bought the hardware, i'm looking for advice about the reinstall, particularly about preparation whilst i've still got easy access to my settings & data on the existing hard drive. sorry i didn't explain myself very coherently.

Oh.  So you already have everything you are going to use but you just want advice on how to hook everything up?

Put all your data on your old HDD.
1. I also always make screenshots of the services/startup programs i disable so when i reinstall, one of the first things i do is disable them.
2. Screenshot or write down all your passwords.
3. Move your savegame folders from My documents to a save place.
4. Screenshot your Firefox/IE extensions so you will know what to reinstall.

not connecting the hardware, i know how to do that. what i don't want to do is boot up the new system & find out i've forgotten to keep something like ISP account information or what software i had installed. it doesn't matter, this is only my second rebuild so i'm very cautious.

yeah i think ntbackup saves everything stored in 'my documents' so i dump everything i want in there before i backup, i just hope it keeps all my profile settings as well.
