A while back, I posited the idea of investing SS into the military industrial complex.  Many of you pointed out how that would make war more desirable.

How about this?  What if we invested SS funds in oil companies and other energy sectors?  Oil just keeps going up, and while it can't do this endlessly, there's no reason for oil to fall in value anytime soon.  Since the AARP will never let us end SS, we might as well invest the funds in a highly profitable industry.

That requires pragmatic thinking...

...so it will obviously never happen.

Why not just completely privatize it, and let market conditions in general prevail?

first, investment in oil is significant, way too high for simple, or even complex, investment. The industry is worth several trillion dollars, and current investors will not sell their shares for cheap prices because, as you said, oil i profitable. The benefits of investing in oil will be outweighed by the actual purchase of shares. Second, oil is slowly being replaced. The significant investments that SS would make would become worthless before we actually begin making profit. Also, alternate fuel sources are too diverse right now to make a decision, and i believe that the world will continue to use diverse methods to obtain energy rather than focus on one type.

these are just my predictions/opinions.

We could...  but I have a feeling something along the lines of what I posted is more likely to get through Congress.

Admittedly, I too would prefer the traditional privatization angle.
