Phenom inal?... idle temps..

My new cpu came yesterday

The Phenom 9850 black edition!!

It stamps all over my old x2 5000+ but the idle temps seem to be ridiculously high at stock speeds with the stock cooler
After I booted this morning it was straight up to 48 c and under load it sits just shy of 60!!!

Could this be a mistake with my installation of it or is it just that with the power load (125w) this thing runs super hot? Did like the look of the amd cooler though half decent looking heat sink on it!

Any comments or advice would be really appreciated as I was wanting to clock this up to 3.0, just not really sure if i should if its running this hot now which is a major hassle because that was the reason I got it in the first place!

And yes Intel probably is the way to go but I forked out too much for my MB to replace it atm and this phenom seemed to have real bang for buck qualites!

It's a 125w-CPU. 125w is a lot of heat to dispose of. Even if the cooler looks "decent", it's gonna run warm. You got to get a "decenter" aftermarket cooler to do anything with it. Like a Gemin, CNPS9700 or Tuniq Tower.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I know that it is a huge step up from a chip that runs at 95W odd, but it just seems very hot to run at those temps at idle when the recommended temp is no more than 65 from what I've seen..
Gonna try some new grease and see if that helps things. If not then I might RMA it and see if the new one runs any cooler. If not then I guess I'm gonna have to fork out for a new cooler - does seem a bit lax to supply cooler that can't do the job properly especially after all the TLB bug nonsense that delayed the release in the first place

Well, if you got the BE, you've got to get an aftermarket cooler to oc it, as that's the only reason to get a BE... If you're not gonna oc, you might as well go for a standard one.
