Then returning it the next day, and then finding out less than a year later that the LCD panel itself needs replacing? This never happened when I bought an LG monitor, made in Korea.

No. Japan is full of win for producing high-quality items. China is only well known as a mass-producer. This is because they've been producing various items for ages, and because of this, they have a much larger and developed industry to make something of the same nature cheaper and quicker than most western countries. So cheap, in fact, that it's cheaper to manufacture over there and ship back here than have it produced in our own countries. I think the attitude in China needs to change from "Quantity is Best" to "Quality is Best", but this probably will never change.

I've been reccomended, by other tradespeople, to never buy tools, and NEVER EVER buy safety equipment. Another student from Tech had to get a piece of a tin Coke can that was lodged in his foot removed. That bit of metal was supposed to be a steel cap for one of his boots.

Guess where those boots were made.

It's easy for guys like that to sing Walmarts praise, they've likely never tried to run a business.

As for # 2, great, we're making the third world better by ruining American companies. He actually defends sweat shops and child labor.

I'm no fan of unions, but seriously, would you consider a job a Walmart if you weren't doing good with your families business?
Great career track? Would you recommend your daughter get a job at Walmart?

And are those two guys a couple? The big guys the man and the quiet guy is the girl?

No, Panda is right.

In fact most of our mineral exports are directly to China, in the forms of Iron ore, Copper ore, Coal, and we ship huge amounts Wool to China also. And that list doesn't include $4.7bn (Aus) of mainly alumina, wheat & sugar. China is getting at least 21% of our total exports.

And the main imports we get from China are Clothing, Computers and Telecommunications equipment.

China's principal import sources of 2006 were:

Japan 14.6%
Republic of Korea 11.3%
Taiwan 11.0%

doesn't look like they are getting much recycled material to me.

If Americans and other westerners didn't keep buying cheap shit, China wouldn't keep making it. You can't complain at the Chinese for supplying Americans the cheap shit that obviously lots prefer to the more expensive quality stuff. Saying that the Chinese can only make cheap crap is completely stupid. They're earning loads of money from sensibly supplying an American demand for goods that suck. If there was no market to consume crap, China would stop supplying it.

I always thought Walmart served its niche nicely, low-end stuff for the masses.  What I don't get is that besides the fact Walmart doesn't have a union, it's perfect for the democrats - cheaper stuff for the middle to low income families, a lot of jobs, etc.  I think it has something to do with the dems don't like growth where there's got to be a trade off from other business...aka the economic growth should be organic, from existing businesses and competitition should be monitored.

Of course the GOP doesn't have a problem as it adds more jobs and services a specific segment nicely.

Did you even read my post before commenting? Because if you did you totally didn't understand any of it. So let me highlight the important parts.

Japan in the 60-70s - This means 40-50 years ago, not now.
They were like China of today - Which means 40-50 years ago Japan was producing stuff like China is today.
couldn't produce anything of quality - And none of it was any good 40-50 years ago.
now look at them - Today Japan produces very high quality products unlike what they produced 40-50 year ago.
The same will happen to China - China will evolve out of its 'mass' low quality products to produce high quality goods like Japan is now.
on a MUCH bigger scale - China has ten times the population of Japan so when they do start producing high quality good, everyone will have to watch out.

as DrunkFace has said, maybe the chinese struggle to produce high quality goods now, but they'll learn, adapt, and overcome.

In areas where it is needed, they'll simply buy european and american expertise in quality control and management, and they'll still be able to do it for considerable less costs per worker than most of their western competition.

I have witnessed that trend in the industry I work in ( printed circuit boards ). Twenty years ago, the chinese couldn't build a quality PCB even if they wanted to. Now, after decades of learning from western experts, their PCB industry produces boards that provide excellent quality at considerably lower costs.
Boards good enough to import from China and sell to one of the most demanding industries in the world, the automotive industry.

Believe me, if they can produce stuff that satisfies the car makers, they can satisfy anyone with regard to quality. In areas where that is necessary.

Exactly, so the reason for cheap Chinese shit is the low standards of Americans and desire to spend less money, not the Chinese. If Americans refused to buy cheap Chinese crap, China wouldn't make it. Why should they increase their costs and quality if that's not what the marked demands?

I consider driving by the locally owned hardware store to buy a garden hose at walmart for twenty five cents less to be a form of greed.

Walmarts and Home Depots murder small businesses.
This sort of ideology?
