Don't "purchase" software from a "download" site and you won't get viruses.
The proper verb in quotations is acquire, if that is what you are trying to insinuate.

I don't have any AV on my gaming rig. And likely won't put one unless I find something that uses zero resources and doesn't increase boot time.

Of course I have. But acquire is a better verb to use than purchase.

I would recommend AVG after running it for over 3 years, but I have a key from my companie's AV software. We run over 4,000 servers in 3 data centers. All Windows and Linux/UNIX server run F-Prot. http://www.f-prot.com/
I turn it off in services.msc to completely stop all services, but If its good enough for all those servers and desktops it good enough for me.
Zero resources.

I just downloaded the AVG 8.0 last night, and I didn't have pay a single cent, either for the software or to the site from which I downloaded it.

Norton gives great protection, but it slows your computer down to the point where it's just not worth it.  I recently switched to AVG and the performance increase was phenomenal, I don't think I'll ever let Norton slow down my PC again.

That's part of the reason I multiboot and only have Norton installed in the partitions that I don't play games on.

But, use Norton and keep it up-to-date and you'll never need to worry about viruses ever again (pedants: yeah, yeah, that ain't strictly true, but you know what I mean).

Grisoft did this last year when they went to 7.0(or .1).  It will still be free - they are just updating the entire program instead of just a little bit of it.  Think of it as America's Army, the PC game.  They have patch after patch but come this fall, they will update to (I forget what version it is..maybe 4.0?) but it is essentially the same thing except a new engine and improved performance....and it is still free.

Srsly, it'll fuck up your computer, they find each other as a virus and delete key files. Talking from experience here.

Wow, I suppose you're too hardcore for anti-virus?

You must not ever torrent anything. I always scan torrented stuff, just to be sure.

I use Avast, works good (and talks to you )
I torrent stuff, but only from known releasers and trackers. None of that public crap. I'm not saying I'm "too hardcore" for antivirus, antivirus is a good safety-measure, but if you use the web wisely, all you need is a bit of common sense and a firewall.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
