Anyone know?

Surely it depends on what content you're watching. If you're watching something recorded in 4:3 in 16:10, obviously it will be pillarboxed, because it needs to be to preserve the aspect ratio. If you're watching something in 16:9 it will be letterboxed. You won't get any video filling your screen because no videos are ever recorded in 16:10. If you want them to fill it you either have to crop the image or stretch it, losing the ratio (both of these options are substantially worse than having the image letter/pillar boxed).

It also depends on what media player you are using.

I'm using DivX 6.7.0 and sometimes VLC, but the question is mainly about the DivX player.

I don't mind stretching it, that's what I am doing when I change the ratio, it doesn't look that much worse and I prefer it to the black lines.

But my question is how I can I set the ratio to automatically change to 16:10 when I open files?

Neither of those are decent players. Grab Media Player Classic or the old version of BS Player.

Not something I do, since I can't stand watching distorted images.
