MOSCOW - Russian and U.S. officials signed an important agreement on civilian nuclear power today that will give the United States access to Russian technology and could hand Moscow lucrative deals for storing spent fuel.
I thought we were worried about Russians shit being unsecured and used for a WMD?

We are more worried about unsecured nuclear weapons in former Soviet republics than spent fuel. There's still a fairly complex process required to bring the spent fuel to weapons-grade levels.

The threat from nuclear fuel comes a lot from some nutjob adding a load of highly radioactive material to a convensional explosive and setting that off. A cloud of radioactive particles being unleashed in a major city would be a hideous disaster. Not anywhere near as deadly as an actual nuke, the psychological effects and mass disruption/cleanup would be very costly.

Read about this in newspaper moments ago, thought they are just going to exchange knowledge on nuclear technology but storing wastes on Russian soil? They must be really nice those Russians to allow that.

Quite possible they'll use Novaya Zemlya, that place is quite possibily one of the largest nuclear dumping sites in Russia.

Off the coast of SF, near the farallon islands is a huge nuclear waste dump the US has been using since the 50's.  THere's tens of thousands of barrels down there, the sunken carrier USS Independence (used for testing nukes on), and plenty of it is exposed to sea life and the water...for that last 6 decades.  http://www.sfweekly.com/2001-05-09/news/fallout/  <-- good read if you have time.

In short, the country used this as the first and main nuclear dump site.  The UC Berkeley (Livermore site) nuke facilities did alot of testing on animals and other such things and dumped it all, in barrels in this dump site.  One guy who worked the barge from '55 to '59 had the job of dumping the barrels when the barge got full, and the ones that floated, he shot at until they sunk.  30 miles off the coast.  It's one of the biggest and best fisheries in the Pacific coast so alot of your local supermarket seafood comes from there.  Num nums!  No wonder the great whites in this area attack humans so much! lol

Does anyone else find it appalling that the US has to ask friggin' RUSSIA for the latest nuclear reactor designs?

I mean...really! It's sad how far we've fallen in our investments in advanced technical infrastructure. Beyond development of the internet and some advances in aerospace technology, most of our advanced R&D has been purely military in nature.

"It will give the US acess to state-of-the-art Russian nuclear technology"
That doesn't mean that the US doesn't have its own "state-of the-art" nuclear technology.  Nuclear technology is usually a pretty safely guarded national secret.  TDifferent countries have different designs, and since they were developed completely separately, both countries can learn for other designs.  I don't see how that illustrates America's supposed technological inferiority.
