Rough timeline:
9,000 BC + -> 1169: Ireland ruled by native Gaelic kings, chieftains, druids and warlords.
1169: Norman invasion of Ireland leading to English rule.
1169 -> 1603: Invader English begin to send noblemen over to Ireland to take control of cities and large tracts of fertile land and to subjugate the natives as tenants on their own land. However, on the upside, in the meantime the Normans actually get assimilated by the Irish.
1603: Gaelic chieftains and their political superstructure decimated in decisive war by the invader English.
1603 -> 1691: Native Gaelic Irish brutally suppressed and slaughtered as English send thousands of 'planters' over to push them westward and take control of their land. Cromwell massacres HALF the population of the country, brutally bombarding the civilian populace of Drogheda to death with artillery in one particular act. Gaelic Irish given 'untermensch' status with almost total destruction of their civil rights, under the penal law system. Cromwell decrees "to Hell or to Connaught" - Connaught being one of the poorest and least fertile regions of the country, west of the Shannon. Battle of the Boyne means that Northern Ireland is essentially lost to this day, with the English thereafter able to easily settle thousands of their stealth invasion force of new landlords.
1691 -> 1800: The invader English continue to reap reward and riches from our land, the most fertile in western Europe, as the Gaelic Irish suffer under conditions no better than slavery. English 'plantations' multiply, most successfully in modern day Northern Ireland. The repression - fought continuously with low level guerilla violence - comes to a head with the 1798 rebellion headed by Wolfe Tone. A disastrous failed promise of help from France and inferior weaponry condemn the rebellion to defeat before it has even started. England soon after merges Ireland into the 'United Kingdom' against its wishes.
1800 -> 1916: Daniel O'Connell wins a civil rights coup for the native Gaelic Irish but the English still rule. Low level violence against colonial overlord forces continues apace until the Great Famine in the 1840s. While Ireland produces enough food to feed its entire population, England continues to export food back to England. The population of native Gaelic Irish drops from 8 million to 5 million through starvation and emigration to the USA. The Gaelic cultural revival and nationalist fervour take off thereafter eventually culminating in the 1916 Easter rising against the English. Dublin city centre is decimated by the British and the rising is a failure but the act goes into the annals of Irish history as an act of unrivalled bravery and the killed and executed are hailed as martyrs.
1916 -> 1922: The Irish crank up the civil disobedience until the English can no longer contain the situation. The English sue for peace but state that they keep the six counties that make up modern Northern Ireland. Michael Collins ILL-ADVISEDLY accepts (MORON!!!!). His decision prompts a civil war that lasts several years.
1922 -> 1949: Ireland begins breaking all links with England until finally in 1949 it finally becomes a Republic and withdraws even from the Commonwealth of Nations.
1949 -> Present: The fight for the six counties rages on. Demographically speaking it is highly likely that they will become part of the Republic once again within the next 20 or 30 years.....!
