I know this subject has the definate danger of becoming a flaming match, but I was curious how people out there feel about there nations.  I have seen the gamut here in D&ST, from people who are extremely nationalistic, to those who want to abolish all borders, and about everywhere in between.

I am extremely proud to be an American;  I enjoy the freedoms I have, and want them protected, be it from other nations, my own government, or from fellow citizens eager to trade our (mostly my) freedoms away.

Anyone thats thats registered on this forum would not choose anything but option 1. Think about that before you say that I'm wrong.

My pride comes in the form of the people that make up our nation. Not necessarily the government.

I think there are also those who would pick option #2.  But I am curious if there really are any who will choose #3, especially when no one knows they did it.

Are you talking about the government itself, the politicians, or are you referring to the current administration?  Our form of government, after all, is inherent, at least partially, to who we are as a people.

I'm kind of halfway between #1 and #2. I love my country, I love the liberties that I feel so privileged to have; but there's a lot of room for improvement.

Despite its many shortcomings (then again, what nation has none?), I still think the United States is one the best nations to reside in on this planet.

Still chose #1

True, but the reason I say it is because many of the users here come from the the U.S., Canada, Scotland, England, Germany, and many other democratic nations. Now, I can almost guarantee you these people love their country. My point is if a member on this website was from Cuba, you can be almost sure they would choose option 3, and a chance of someone from that country signing on here is very small. My point being, its a great question, but its just offered to such a limited crowd which has the privilege to be visiting this website today that their country has provided the the service and means to do so.

I'll try to remember that the next time they mention entire states being ignored in the primary election. Millions of voters being disenfranchised does little to promote the case for government by the people.

Null; I hate the current state of my country, but I'm not ashamed to be from here at all. I'm proud of my country's history, and hopefully one of these days within my lifetime we'll pull ourselves out of the gutter and get back to where we were.

Seriously though, while I'm rather proud of this nation moreso than China (much to the disappointment of my parents), it definitely isn't the greatest country in the world.

especially not on the level of the greatest actor in the world

There´s aspects i love and those i hate with my country but mostly i could´nt care the slightest about my nationality. Option 2 seems best.

...and also try to remember that 50% voter turnout is considered excellent.  There are tens of millions of people who choose not to let their voice be heard.

I never said it was a perfect form of government, but our system of goverment is part of the reasons we are who we are.  For better or for worse.

I do not consider myself to belong to any nationality. I have no loyalty to any particular country, and consider my relationship to the country in which I reside only as one in which I use social services through the payment of taxes and as one where I can enjoy the greatest freedoms. In that sense, I do not find pride (which I consider a silly notion) but more of a sense of thankfulness to that particular country. I would admit that I have limited experience in international habitation (although I have extensively traveled), but my ties to family and friends particularly challenge any roaming. In that sense, my loyalties lie primarily with friends and family, not nation, and are the important aspects of my life. I do have several opportunities in the near future to enjoy life elsewhere, but it does not necessarily disappoint me to leave other than nostalgic memories.

Part of who I am? The system was out of control long before I ever had a chance to vote.

Thomas Jefferson could be considered part of "who we are". The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Yes, a part of who you are, because you were raised in this enviroment.  It has seeped into your psyche, whether you like it or not.  Even by in your spite, it has affected who you are.

And yes, I agree that Thomas Jefferson could be a part of our upbringing, if his teachings were used in school more often.  If he was brought forth into the national conciousness more than he has been.

You are lecturing me about the environment I grew up in and my personal psyche. That kind of vague generalization doesn't fly with me. You might try the more feeble minded around here.

I wouldn't necessarily say the US is "the best", but there is none better.

Warts and all, there is no better place in the world. There are certainly some that are just as good in their own ways, but none better.

"My nation is okay, but just one of many."

bit to a lot of countries. guess me being German/Dutch makes me go for option 2, seeing that I find option 1 a bit too self centered.

when it comes to freedom it's quite in the top region.

Living in Sweden, I'm in between the first two options but I went for the first one. (rocks)

However, the ability to show nationalistic pride are regretfully hampered by the notion that doing so would make you a racist.
