Tbh, they must be doing something right. If they're so popular, and the Russian economy is booming as it is.

He is however getting results in Russia dispite his enormous powerhunger, might be he wants to see his politics yield the forthcoming positive results before he let it go ... power is as addictive as drugs if not worse ...

Best Russian president for his people ever imho, he has been able to repair much of what Jeltsin destroyed ...

In other news the State Duma (lower house) has 56 open seats. Elections will be held.

Anyway if I was Russian I would support him. He obviously showed that he has what it takes to run Russia. Screw democracy !!!!

That's very true, and while I may not like that he is acting dictator, he is certainly the best head of state for Russia at the moment, and I think will be back in 4 years as President.

I'm hoping that another will step into the role of course, but I don't believe they exactly have the chance or opportunity to do so while he holds so much sway.

How can you say Russia is doing well? The only thing supporting this precarious one party authoritarian state is high oil prices (Yeltsin didn't have that luxury). It would take an idiot of monumental scale not to screw it up for a country sitting on one of the largest reserves of recoverable oil on the planet. That's why he is willing to put the world at the brink by recklessly raising tensions (supporting Iran) because he knows how important oil prices are...if it goes (prices will collapse eventually), so does the Russian economy which has relied far too much on a single commodity
Russia is not doing well but they are doing much better now than ever before, Putin has with a hard hand reclaimed all the outsourced industry that Yeltsin "gave" away in his alcohol inspired daze, Putin has put optimism back in the Russian populace and has claimed Russia's spot in global politics.

It did take an idiot to screw it up and Putin has repaired that damage, not all of his actions are for the good like the war he is unable to win, very much like another superpower come think of it that actually have caused more global instability than Russia tbh ...

I wouldn't fuck with Russians, the same couldn't be said for any other nationality from me. Very extreme in their views are Russians. If Putin is doing well for his people then it doesn't matter what Westerners think. He'll still be president.

-Putin had the benefit of high oil prices, not Yeltsin and that is the only reason the economy is doing well (and as soon as prices collapse so does the country)
This is not about oilprices, you need to read up on Russian history for the last 20 years ...

Weren't the opposing candidates of PUtin's successor silenced and ridiculed by state run media and other dirty politics?  Or is there actual love for Putin.

I very much doubt he is as popular as the state run media wants it to look ... dirty politics and rigged elections is however not a typical Russian phenomenon.

Norwegian journalists visited Russia on many ocasions during the last year reporting from the campaigns and interviewing people on the streets - there where support for many candidates as well as massive support for Putins candidate and the need to continue the politic and reformation he started 8 years ago ... he ended the oligarks iron grip on their industry and returned much needed income for the Russian state and this was before the massive raise on the price of oil.

putin was the head of the 2nd Chief Directorate for the KGB back in the day.
as someone already pointed out, the value of the oil they are sitting on is one of the main reasons for his success.
beyond that, hes just another corrupt politician....more so than others, because he is already accustomed to such things from previous experiences.

The high price of oil has really only been significant for the last 2 or 3 years, he made the basis of his politics before that and will carry them on for the next 4 and maybe the 4 after that ... civil rights and growth for the common Russian population is a priority in the next period announced both by Putin and his new boss ...

...as long as those civil rights don't include the freedom to criticize the government.
