I've never bought a retail-issue processor before so I'm just making sure.

I just got the computer I was talking about before and the CPU cooling solution is a big copper/aluminum heatsink with no fan on it, but it has a big fat 120mm case fan next to it which has to function as the case fan as well as the CPU fan and it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO loud.  When I tried to run Half-Life 2 I thought the fan was just gonna break free and go straight through the back of the computer.

yes.

Edit - I think there's something wrong with your fan if it's so loud, sounds like it's about to die. 120mm fans don't make a lot of noise.

Your CPU heatsink is supposed to have a 80mm fan.

This is a Dell.  They basically took a conductive metal tower and slapped it on the 3.2GHz P4 and then put the giant case fan directly in front of it and called it a cooling solution.  The fan fluctuates according to how much load is on the CPU, it doesn't blow really hard constantly, only when I play games or do anything CPU intensive.

What kind of CPU load temperatures are you getting anyways?

I don't know, neither Everest nor the BIOS will tell me.  As of right now, it's REALLY quiet, I was freakin out because I thought it was gonna turn itself off.

Yes, if you buy a retail version. If you buy an OEM version, you will just get the chip in a plastic clamshell.

ahh, yes, I have seen those dell cooling solutions. They work pretty good tbh. Fan less HS, and then be airduct from the heatsink to the back where you have a 120mm fan.

Again, if it makes as much noise as you say, trade out the fan, sounds like it's about to die.

Yep - and the retail C2D fan isn't too bad, either.

Yeah, all boxed retail processors come with a heatsink/fan assembly unless otherwise stated.

That setup you're describing is a really decent cooling solution, although it's mostly used on assembly line workstations and in servers. The air flows so much better across the fins of the heat sink. If the fan is loud, and it's of standard dimensions with standard or easily modified connectors, I'd look into getting a quiet model from a good brand instead.

I had a dell 3.2ghz p4 before. I really hope you're not considering taking it apart though because it is a BITCH. Oh hi massive dell custom solution cooling (it actually pwns) but is attached to the case in about 50 different places with wierd dell proprietary screws.

Yup dell cooling is actually awesome. Shame they suck for everything else though. Check out my dell 7800gtx:

That's just the standard 7800/7900GTX cooler with a Dell sticker on it...
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I picked MSI just for you <3

Later on with the 512mb and 7900 many companies realised they needed better cooling. But at the time of the 256mb 7800 gtx release dell was the only company to offer this type of cooling. Google for random article back from launch date:

Yep, that's exactly the setup.

Like I said though, the fan speeds up like it would if it were the processor fan.  If the proc gets hot then that's when it hits the high RPMs.  If I replace the fan, won't it do the same thing?  Or are you suggesting that an aftermarket fan will be better made, and therefor more silent at such RPMs?

I've already taken the heatsink off to replace the thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5.  It wasn't that hard to do but I sliced myself on something two or three times in the process without knowing it until I looked at my fingers.  I'm guessing it was the fins on the heatsink.

You're probably talking about if I take the fan off though aren't you?

I fail to see how that really matters.  I got the computer for free and it was several years better than what I had before so i'm gonna make it work.

My old computer was a Socket 478 400MHz FSB, DDR1, AGP 4x, IDE-only HP Pavilion

This is an LGA 775 800MHz FSB, DDR2, PCI-e, IDE with SATA capability Dell Optiplex.

And it was the only version available for ages as that was the reference for 256mb..unless you got a dell. The beastly cooler wasn't reference till 512mb and 7900 If you click through on the pics on your link you'll see they're all months after release or 512mb versions

Fortunately I'm not into overclocking then.  I've never had a dual core computer before so the performance I get out of this machine will still be phenomenal in my eyes.  I mean really take a look at what I had and what I have.  HUGE difference.

Here's what it can take as far as Core 2s go:

Just use bits of wire to hold it on. The twisty kind.

He said fan rather than heatsink, so I thought he meant how to hold the fan onto the heatsink.
