Problems with a 7900GT

I recently got my hands to a PNY 7900GT for very cheap, and installed it to my computer today. I ran 3dmark06 and was surprised of the results. I got 4770 marks, compared to 5986 marks with a 8600GT in the same setup. 7900GT is supposed to be getting SM 3.0 scores at around 2600, this gets 1800. Certainly there is a problem somewhere. However, everything looks normal in the GPU-Z screen, Which leads me to think it would be the drivers. I got rid of them with DC and reinstalled, but that helped nothing. I am pretty desperate now...

I have tried:

* Reinstalling drivers (169.21)
* Resetting chipset bios (in case the nForce bios had tweaked itself for the 8600)
* Using 2xMolex to 6-pin converter instead of the 6-pin of the PSU (in case the problem was the card not getting enough power)

But nothing has helped.

Any ideas?

I have a 7900GS, but I don't feel like downloading 3dMark06.
Overclock that badboy DU. I have my GS at 550MHz core, 770MHz memory, and it's running beautifully. CoD4 on high settings with the occasional laggy bits, but it's still awsm.

I don't feel like overclocking it when it touches 72C on 3dmark with the stock cooler. Will do if I get aftermarket cooler though.

Yet OC'ing won't solve the problem here. The card is performing 30% worse than it should.

I wouldn't run 7900GT over 75C myself to be honest...

I'll blow it out this weekend, see what it runs at.
Someone told my 90C is normal for a card of this series to run at under load.

To all those "saying overclock it": He's got an underfperforming card, and obviously some rather serious issue. Overclocking to compensate for that isn't the greatest of ideas, as it's only masking the problem.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Hm, DU, I'm looking through the ORB right now. It seems that every card that's past 5k is oc'd by quite a lot. The 7900GT is also a very clock-friendly card, as it's just a downclocked variant of the 7900GTX on 650MHz stock. Maybe it's performing just as it's supposed to.

Also, reinstall RivaTuner, or whatever overclocking tool you used for the 8600. And try with the old 97.31 drivers.

Looking at Tomshardware charts it should be scoring much better than it is scoring now, yes, on stock clocks.

Return it and say that it's underperforming. Ask for a new card, and try that one.

But now I have:
e6600 @ 3ghz
4 gb 800mhz ram @ 950mhz
8800GT
11000 3dmarkscore

2GB 800MHz 4-4-4-12 ram > 2GB 400MHz ram

It can't be just normal. Taken that I get about the same scores with 8600GT @ stock and the E2180 @ stock (2.0GHz) as I get with E2180 @ 3.0GHz and 7900GT @ stock.

7900GT is supposed to pwn 8600GT ffs.

It seems there are two kinds of 7900GTs: One with 520MHz core and 1500MHz RAM, and one with 450MHz core and 1320MHz RAM. You must've seen benches of the higher-power one.

The 8600 series also gained some signifigant power in the later driver releases, making them up to 30% faster. 8600s aren't that bad anymore.

Not sure what PNY's policy is, but when I complained about my BFG 7950GT not performing well, they let me RMA it without hassle. I ended up just buying an 8800GTS (G92), but I could have easily received a brand new 7950GT.

As long as you have a decent card to use while you're waiting for the RMA (you have the 8600, right?), I think it's the best thing to do.

As long as you have a decent card to use while you're waiting for the RMA (you have the 8600, right?), I think it's the best thing to do.

He bought it for 40€ second-hand.

Ach, afterall and after some painful investigating, this seems to work just fine. The quite lovely power boost for 8600GT in the latest drivers, and this card being the lower clocked/clocking version of the model explain it all.

Afterall, I got this for way under the real price, so i can sell it without losing anything, even get some gains.
