I didn't figure this out myself, but found it somewhere on the net.
Anyways, there are two little tricks I found. (Your iPod doesn't need to be jailbroken either)
1. Go to your home screen. As you know, double tapping the home screen button brings up the music controls. Double tap the homescreen button, and right when you start to see the controls come up, quickly hit the sleep button on top of your iPod. This will make the screen black.
Turn it on again, and you'll notice your controls on the unlock screen. Now you can control your music without having to unlock your iPod with the slider.
After you get that far, slide the unlock slider half way, then double tap the home button. This will put the controls neatly underneath the clock for you. It will remain there for as long as you don't unlock your iPod.
2. For this second trick, slid the unlock slider half way, then drag your finger over the sound bar slider. Nothing will happen at first. Take your finger off the volume slider and then turn the volume up again. You will get a cool little speaker on your screen with some volume bars underneath it.
Pretty cool
