A quick mechanical question...

So, as a challenge posted by my driving instructor, I need to find vehicles which have a transmission-mounted parking/emergency brake as opposed to a rear-wheel/axle one.

So far, I've found the Land Rover Defender. Any others you can think of?

Pretty much any automatic?

I dunno, I hadn't really ever heard of the E-brake being done off the trans...Remind me not to ebrake a defender....

No. Almost all autos are on the rear axle.

It has to be a 4wd (possible awd) car, otherwise it wouldn't have it.

Not the emergancy, but when you put your auto in park it mechanically locks the transmission too...pretty much the same thing your asking about only not the real answer.

Yeah, park locks the tranny. True that.
However, what I want is the parking brake. I know it's not as useful as it could be, but it's a matter of principle. Most cars simply actuate the rear brake pads with a cable.
The defender is waht I mean, with a separate brake on the driveshaft behind the tranny in lieu of the cable-operated rear brakes as the PARKING brake (ie handbrake or pedal brake for an auto)

Not all simply actuate the rear breaks, Some will have disc brakes, with a separate drum brake inside the hat of the rotor. Lemme google around a lil and see if I cant find anything...

I guess it wouldn't be worth making a new account (or would it?) but I have a sneaking suspicion that the folks at http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/board/index.php could get you at least fairly close to a completely list

@ Cdnloser: You wear out your brake pads about 5x faster...it's equivalent to driving while having your foot 1/8 down on the brake pedal.
@ Vicktor: Thanks, i'd +1 you but only 1nce in 24h. I know they used to do it in the 50s, but the instructor wants recent ones (<15 yrs)

Not certain, but I "think" the Suzuki SJ410 had one.

ahh recent eh?
....google came up with custom kits for off roaders...What ever benefit it still holds seems to be in that realm, check out heavy duty off road stuff hummers and the like.
