I test drove a diesel car yesterday. I thought it was pretty good. Does anyone else here own a diesel or has had any experience with them in the past? Would be interested also to here what is the best way to drive them ( diesel owners will know what I mean).

The car I drove was a Peugeot 308 2.0 ltr. Not fast from a standstill but had decent go when moving. Also has something called FAP ( heehee) which apparently is some sort of exhaust thingy.

ITS A TRAP!

Diesel is at least $.50 more a gallon in the southeastern US.

If its cheaper across the pond, go for it though.

They get more mileage per gallon though

Diesel is cheaper, but regular gas gets you more MPG

So if you do the math for $ per mile, your paying more with Diesel.

I thought diesels were more economical. Maybe thats just on the highway. The world record for the most economical car is a diesel. Anyways, diesel is more expensive in Australia as well, so I will have to factor that in as well.

Diesel engines also last a lot longer than ones that consume regular gas. Oil changes aren't as frequent.

most small diesels i've read up on get better mpg than gas.   big truck diesels may not but car ones do.

so if diesel is 15% more expensive but 30-100+% more efficient it's not a deal?

You could be completely correct on that one, I just remember listening to some radio show with these car experts, and this was a year, maybe two ago that they said that

But the way gas prices go these days that fact* could be outdated

And no.

Nope, not even in your backwards society.

Puegeot 308 XS 6.7L/100Km
Peugeot 308 XS Hdi 4.9L/100Km

That's almost 40% more fuel efficient for the Diesel.

Ford Focus 7.1L/100Km
Ford Focus Diesel 5.6L/100Km

That's almost 30% more fuel efficient.

Toyota Land Cruiser 14.5L/100Km
Land Cruiser Diesel 10.3L/100Km

That's over 40% more fuel efficient.

No, The bigger and heavier the vehicle the more likely that Diesel is better. Find me a truck which uses petrol. They need the Torque of Diesel and  the fuel economy along with the much longer service length to keep costs down.

Diesel is less polluting, more powerful, and more efficient than gasoline
it is in fact better than gasoline in all ways, but the nitrous oxides really upset the enviromaniacs so diesel is taxed way more

Diesels have more torque than petrol engines but less power. As someone said you get more km's per litre. And engines have a longer life span generally able to get to 300,000km without to much hassle/major work. The new V8 diesels in the landcruisers are nice...

I know Diesels are better for a hard working truck but the actual difference in MPG between say a V8 truck and it's diesel counterpart are not nearly as much as with smaller cars and trucks.

A diesel engine compared to a big block gasoline engine you would find in 1 ton light truck with similiar power can be as much as 100-150% more efficient.

Our family has had diesels for ages. BMW X5 3.0sd, Range Rover 3.0L (way better then the previous gen Range rover with the 4.6L V8. That thing needed a full tank of gas every 200km), Gold IV 1.4 (I think), and way more before that. Our boat is diesel (9.4L 575Hp ). Modern diesels are great. Better efficiency and are pretty damn fast. At least I don't drive them any different from cars with regular fuel.

Well that's simple. Don't idle your engine.

Seriously, what the fuck are you on about?

Regular petrol/gas is cheaper than diesel, and a diesel engine is more economical, hence getting more MPG, and better CO2 emissions.

Evidence:

VW Passat Diesel, 36 MPG.

VW Passat Petrol, 27 MPG.

Another good thing about diesel is that you can make it from cooking oil ( with a bit of processing). I guess if we do run out of oil, I can still run the car on Biodiesel. Although it may be hard to do the 10 000 klm oil change and service.

You need to actually have diesel to make Biodiesel, you know that right?

And you can't make diesel from cooking oil, but you can convert a car so it runs on vegetable oil or chip fat.

Can you give me a reference for your info. I have checked wiki and they say that you do make Biodiesel from vegetable oil or animal fats. They also do not mention that you need diesel in the production process for biodiesel. I realise that Wiki aint the best source, but they are generally pretty good. I would like to check your info first though. Feel free to check mine.

You need a combustible liquid for Biodiesal. I think you can use Diesel, gasoline, etc. I think anyway, don't quite remember.

If you do need Diesel though, it is in much much smaller quantities then you would use normally. I think you can get away with under $2/gallon with Biodiesal.
