    2001: A Space Odyssey - Terrible, would rather watch grass grow.
    Blade Runner -  Not only is this boring as hell it brings up bad memories from year 12 English, as it's one of the 'texts' we had to study.
    Dune - WTF....
    Alien - An ok movie, but seriously lacking consistent entertainment.
    Aliens - The only 'good' movie here. (In fact it's better then 'good').

Now here's some, choices which would have made your poll respectable.
Star Wars (mainly the first 3, IV,V & VI, but also II & III to a lesser extent)

I'm sure there are plenty of others MUCH better then those you have selected.

From what you listed, 2001 is the best.  But, personally, Gattaca is about the best Sci-Fi movie I have ever watched - it isn't popular because it doesn't have lasers and space battles, I guess.  It is the best because it includes the science/morality twists and thought provocation that I love in Sci-Fi.  It was also a surprise to me, since I hadn't seen it in theaters.

Here are some other movies I have liked more than your list:

Star Wars IV
Star Trek:  Revenge of Khan  (seems stupid now, but at the time I loved it)
Serenity
Matrix
Jurassic Park

Null Vote.

THX 1138 and Blade Runner are two far better films than any of the options, and that's just two off the top of my head...

And, I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect, if it's anything like as good as the book, A Scanner Darkly probably blows them all out of the water.

Oh, and that weird film with the 'Angel' that I can never remember the name of...

I've been meaning to see that for some time! Some of my friends studied that in their extension English class... never did ext english.

And while Bladerunner does bring back memories of Year 12 English, I did like it. Very interesting. Sharky, good to see someone mention Stargate. A movie that's lead to 10 Seasons of SG-1, and 4 of SG Atlantis... that is a fucking awesome movie (granted, it was awesome in its own right).


And of course, the Matrix. Love the matrix...
