If Intel goes through with the plans/rumours of making most CPUs unclockable, I'll cry. I really hope they'll forget about their initiative with the next generation after Nehalem. OCing low-end stuff is the most fun part of computers, and what makes every computer unique

What's your view on this?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

When have they said this? I've heard nothing of it.

I heard about this everywhere. Only the high-end Bloomfield Nehalem CPUs and LGA1366 motherboards will have OC capabilities.

It will be a sad day in history of PC enthusiasts.  *CRIES*

I love overclocking. The current C2D/C2Q generation is the best bang for buck OC one that probably will ever be. Overclocking is sooo fun and gives a lot performance for zero cost when you know what you are doing. like 70% OC of my E2180.

I just gotta get one of those Bloomfields...

What does making their chips unlockable have to do with you not being able to overclock?

Nevermind, I'm blind today.  It says unclockable.

I don't honestly see how they would stop it.  I don't think they can lock the FSB.

That will reduce the amount of broken motherboards/RAM/videocards thus saving more money by not having to send a new card when a broken piece of hardware comes in from RMA and you will not have to buy big giant coolers because otherwise your CPU will go boom 'cuz your running 1.9v through it.

Some people here can afford aftermarket coolers, you know

I'd like to see your puny stock cooler handle 150w of pure heat and keep the source under 60C.

I found some real stuff...

LGA1160 will NOT have OC support. Only the high-end LGA1366. That's right folks, two new sockets coming soon.

LGA1160 CPUs have only dual channel DDR3 support and also some other features are cutted down.

But disabling overclocking seems to not be the only thing that worries me... READ THIS ABOUT LGA1160!

"Moreover, the CPU silicon will include an integrated PCIe 2.0 controller, that allows users to plug in a single graphics card."

wut! one gfx card!

Fuck LGA1160 then. How many times more expensive is LGA1366 going to be? Why can't they just keep it all to one socket, and make cheaper un-OCable chips?

Thinking about it though, that'd make sense with two sockets. That way, they can force mobo manufacturers to make mobos for LGA1160 that have a fixed FSB.

If they start making some decent chips that OC well, Intel can get fucked.

The 7% overclock that they made with this new fancy technology doesn't impress me and my 43% overclocked E6600

My E2180 got 70% OC. With E2140 you can do over 100% OC.
