http://gas2.org/2008/05/09/2009-jetta-b … emissions/

[H]igh fuel prices and a dramatic change in environmental consciousness means that diesel is becoming more and more attractive for American drivers every day. This is why many customers, especially in California, have been waiting for a super-clean diesel like our BlueTDI. I think this motor will help the diesel get its big break in America because it consumes so little and yet can go such long distances on a single fill-up. And in a country as big as the United States, this is a priceless advantage. On the highway, for example, this engine can reach up to 60 miles per gallon. This is an improvement of 12 percent over its predecessor, which had a lower capacity and higher emissions.
Diesel's pretty pricey in the US (it costs more than even premium gas) but I'd rather pay $4.20 a gallon (or whatever it is these days) and get 60MPG than pay $4.00 and get 20MPG. Diesels these days are also much better than the olden days... much cleaner emissions, and the engines last for a long time. Hopefully more stuff like this gets made. As much as I like the idea of hydrogen, it's a long ways off... so we might as well do what we can in the meantime.

Again, compared to your average SUV, you'd be refilling anywhere from 3 to 6 times less often.

Why on god's green earth would you compare a compact to an SUV?  Compare it to a Camry/Civic/Focus/Cobalt whatever, cars that are in the same class (I don't know which actual class the VW belongs in, haven't looked; but I know it's not an SUV).  If you're shopping for an SUV you aren't going to shop for a Jetta.

ok

Camry: 2-3 times more efficient
http://autos.yahoo.com/toyota_camry/

Focus: Bit less than 2-3 times more efficient
http://autos.yahoo.com/ford_focus/

Civic: About 2 times more efficient
http://autos.yahoo.com/honda_civic_coupe/

BMW 3 Series: 2-3 times more efficient
http://autos.yahoo.com/bmw_3_series_sedan/

Smart fortwo: about 1.5-2 times more efficient
http://autos.yahoo.com/smart_fortwo/

Prius: 1.25 times more efficient (not a huge difference, but just making a point here)
http://autos.yahoo.com/toyota_prius/

Basically, while diesel is more expensive, you'll be paying for fuel a lot less often. I'd rather pay $70 every few weeks than $140 or even $210.

Nice MPG, but I bet the power on that car is so low that it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's ass.

Do people really need to be able to drag an Abrams tank if their longest commute is from the suburbs to the grocery store and the most off-roading they do is driving on a gravel path to the soccer field?

If that's all you need, buy a golf cart or peddle.

too much work for soccer moms

and golf car doesn't scream 'status.' I mean, neither does a Jetta, but who the hell drives a golf cart on the road?

Also, in the event of a zombie outbreak or invasion, you'll want something that can go faster than a golf cart.

Organized soccer is a modern crappy system ... kids need to have their TVs shut off, and kicked out of the house.  They'll organize pick up games.

They are all over the retirement communities ... Florida ... Arizona.   Anyway, you clearly aren't connected with the modern styles rolling off the assembly lines:

The roads around here will be so congested with "escape" traffic that you'll need something that can fit onto the narrow sidewalks and emergency lanes.  The golf cart is perfect for that.

But a Glof tdi if that car does not suit your likings. On another note there is an audi s4 (correct me if wrong) turbo diesel that goes 0-60 in 6.5 sec, 143 mph top speed and can achieve 43mpg. Thats pretty damn good for under 300whp.
