For our health class, we have to do a project about a form of abuse, of which a movie was an option for the format. Considering one of the two remaining projects must be a presentation, and I hate talking to classes, I elected to make a movie. Not wanting to delve into the actually depressing subjects of depression or addiction, I chose power abuse for the topic. However, I still do need a somewhat depressing or solemn song to play in the background as the class is treated to pictures of Stalin, J. Edgar Hoover, and the House of Saud. This is where I fail, because I have absolutely no knowledge of music, on an absolute and relative scale.

So, could I please get recommendations for songs that would fit this description. Ideally, they would be instrumental or choral, but I can do lyrics as well.

Edit: I was thinking perhaps a bit of the Hymn to Red October, especially during the Soviet parts.

Karma for helpful responses.

How about this one, its a song from the sound track of The Da Vinci Code called "Ad Arcana", listen to the whole song and see what you think.

The part with the violin solo is especially good for your project imo.

Thanks the for the suggestions, Vicktor. I'm thinking a combination of the Zimmer song and the "Song of the Volga Boatmen" will work nicely, but thanks a bunch anyways.

Anything by Portishead, or look for some Soul Coughing.   Soul Coughing isn't really somber, but it would fit perfectly.

I just realized I have no way to get this...

...so I need to, well, yeah.

For the one in the Youtube video, I know there is a Firefox plugin that enables you to download Youtube videos. Is there a utility that separates sound from video in a video?

Google "Download youtube videos", go to the site, follow the instructions and download an .flv.

Then download "Super" and convert the .flv to .mp3 or w/e, thus leaving you with only the sound.

'Leave No Man Behind' is quite good - you'll find it in the Black Hawk Down soundtrack. Quite a sad but very powering song.

alternatively open your sound properties in control panel, and in the recording menu choose "What I hear" instead of line in/mic...then just play the video and hit record on your recording program (windows has one if you don't mind .wav)

I think everyone can agree Hans Zimmer a good film score composer. Crimson Tide is major win as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions as well. This has made my decision slightly more difficult.

I was thinking, who really needs torrents if you can just do this?

Edit: Wow, that is incredibly useful. Mitch92uk=major win.

The Volga one for the end, but I haven't decided for the rest of it.
