Life Polishes the strong and bold and wears down the weak and timid.

After reading some " my life sux and its all someone else's fault posts.

I got to thinking, To me life seems so good. I am raising 2 adopted Bi-Racial Boys for the last 8 years. I have a long commute into a big city. I get up at about 4:15am, I came out of retirement, I blame no one. Pay my own way.Want or wish for no government assistance.

We all pretty much have a blast...most of the time.

Why are some people so beaten down by a life that is so easy compared to even the life that our ancestors had just a few years prior ?

Please leave your age, The summation of a 12 year olds out look is still valued but we are talking about life and experience counts.

A 29 year old friend of mine died suddenly three weeks ago. I attended the funeral on Monday. Had to fly home early from the states for it. Kind of puts a damper on things.

edit: Ok that was bad timing, not supposed to be related to Poe's post, but regardless, that's my perspective of things.

Great thinking. We are so better off than in the past. Those guys had to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. And then they had to go to war.
I think Our expectations raise 50% with each generation. Also women have more to say today. That f**ks thing up.

Everything is relative.  Life in America is better today than it has been for most of the past, but life is probably much worse today for North Koreans than it was 100 years ago.

As for me, things are good.  I'm 28.  I'm extremely cynical and not particularly bold, but the OP does apply to certain things in life.  Throughout history, the strong and bold (re: those with the best technology and military power) have conquered the weak (although many of them were definitely NOT timid).  In effect, might doesn't make right, but it seems to work a lot of the time.

Being assertive does generally benefit you more than being submissive, but knowing when to back down is still important.

Anyway, Hunter, for all the insults we trade, I have to admit that I respect you more knowing that you have adopted 2 kids.  I don't plan on having kids myself, but I figure I'll probably do the adoption thing if I change my mind.

Life is generally good, good health, incredible lifestyle compared with just a generation ago, I basically want for nothing - apart from a Lamborghini and Claudia Schiffer on my arm obviously.

Any dissatisfaction is basically down to decadence - Oh no! My Subaru got a stone chip in the paintwork - wah wah! I have to get up at 7:00am to go to my highly paid desk job - please pity poor me!
Apart from that I just try to take what life throws at me. Whatever comes, it could be much worse.
I must say though, I'm not sure I could take the stress and responsibility of a wife, kids, mortgage - those are the brave guys.

I think you need to have had a bad life and then something makes it better. Maybe finding a girl, coming into some money or getting a better job. Most people haven't had a truly bad time in their life to compare to where they are in their life now.

People know how old I am. I won't ruin my message with an age.

Yes my life sux.

I'm 20, student in nursing in his first year (out of three). Studies are going pretty good and I'm glad for it, for all the work I put in it, it finally pays.

But, the rest is shit, people say I'm shy when they don't know what that means; I'm more open to people than I have ever been in my life but compared to the general definition of shyness, I still am for them. That, and the fact that I act and think a lot more differently than the others, I'm not a clubber, I'm not the kind to go out and get wasted without a reason, I am not interested in material stuff like a car or other shit like that, I think for myself and don't follow the others like a sheep.

That's the main problem I guess, when you think by yourself, you'll be quite lonely (without being emo).

My life is pretty damned good. Asides from personal issues (basically me not being outgoing) that I'd like to change, I have it pretty well off. I've come to realize that I shouldn't let a lot of things keep me down. Life's too short to spend it moping around hoping for a solution... I've come to realize that if I've got a problem with something I should fix it.

I've seen my parents get divorced, my grandparents die of cancer, and my friends die from respiratory attacks and in plane crashes, but I've also got a great family and a fantastic group of friends to balance it all out.  I'm not gonna lie and say that I always try to stay positive, but I rarely, if ever feel depressed for longer than a few minutes.

but as for the OP, I'd like to be able to go to my deathbed knowing that I won the game of life, and currently, i feel that I am on track to do so (but hopefully not for a long time yet).  Today's life is infinitely more complex than that of our ancestors, we know thousands of people, each with their own problems, and one hour watching the news can lead you to believe that the world has gone mad.  Some people have the intelligence, strength, and mental stability to take it all in stride, and some people just can't handle it all at once, and break down.

I have long been a proponent for the belief that we all have different threshholds or different and varying levels of suffering/trials/experience, even though we may call them the same.

To illustrate, I will use Al, Bud, and Chuck.

Al has a cheating girlfriend.  He was in love with her and hoped to marry and have kids one day.  WHen he found out she was cheating, he killed himself promptly.

Bud has a cheating girlfriend.  He was in love with her and hoped to marry and have kids one day.  WHen he found out she was cheating, he sought counseling and realized life was worth living without her.

Chuck has a cheating girlfriend.  He was in love with her and hoped to marry and have kids one day.  WHen he found out she was cheating, he floundered in self misery for weeks, decided to never fall in love again and became a player..making sure not to get too close to his prey.

Same problem?  Different solutions?  Each person had the same experience, yet each dealt differently.  Were the different responses because they have different perspectives on things?  Sure.  Were the differences based on how they normally deal with similar problems? Probably.

In short, we all go through various difficulties and trials in life, and we all deal differently according to our learning and talents and resources and perspective on things, etc, etc.

So saying someone should feel a certain way about something is NOT a correct assumption.  Life will be viewed differently for each person.  If I think I have a hard life, I do have a hard life, even if my friends easily got through the same problems I went through.  In short, it's not safe to assume someone is weak or can't handle something.  And conversely, something you wimp out on may be easily handled by someone you judged as weak.  I see examples of this often.

Live is very good atm. Happily Single for the first time in years. Just finished building and moved into a new house in the country. Big gardens, great sea views etc. Weather is good, BBQ and beer for dinner every night. Make good money. Have a Boy, Casey, stays with me 3-4 nights a week.

I don't have any complaints, except for the forced celibacy single life brings. The credit crunch and draconian planning laws have started a down turn in the construction industry, which will mean leaner times soon. I don't worry about it though, if I did how could I enjoy the now.

Life is great.  I'm married.  We have a kid (5yr old) - Yea bitches, I reproduced!  I'm a  college graduate turned state worker. Awesome insurance with full funded retirement.  I've got my bills (Mortgage) but all vehicles/credit cards are paid off.  I really haven't had such a bad 8 years under Bush.  Then again, I believe in working hard for stuff I want and don't expect the government to give me everything...

Go capitalism. Now I understand why the right wing abandoned George Bush - happy state workers with healthy pensions... Are you sure you shouldn't be voting Democrat...?

LOL.  I'm happy YOU of all people called me on it of.  Actually within the last 15 years my state has switched majority controlling parties for the first time is 120+ years from Democrat to Republican.

I am not your typical state employee.  I work for the legislature.  I work much longer hours than most other state agency employees do during several months out of the year. Also technically, I really don't have an opinion on politicians and what they do/say.  I haven't received a raise in 4 years (including cost of living).  And it was not due to job performance.  It doesn't bother me.  Katrina and the hurricanes in the earlier years really screwed up the economy here in Florida (not the Republicans, not the Democrats, and not George Bush) and the ripples continue.  You can't give away money you don't have and the controlling Republicans here in Florida understand too.

I don't see a problem with working hard for someone and earning your retirement.  It shouldn't matter if it is for the state or Microsoft.

But maybe you're right.  I should vote Democrat.  I'll get fired from my job (unemployment paychecks here I come!) and help the missus pop out another half dozen kids (Hillary at one time wanted to give mother a 1k check per kid), then live off the State.  Meh, not for me -I prefer earning my keep.

Besides I haven't heard that Hillary or Obama if elected would appropriate extra money to states specifically so they can give their employees raises.. Have you?

Loving life, warts and all. An amazing wife who is an unbelievably good mother to our two kids. Two kids who make every day wonderful once I step in the door, regardless of how shitty my day was.

My job is frustrating, but rewarding at the same time. I long for being back in the field where shit actually gets done, but understand my current role. I have to explain fairly esoteric things to fighter pilots who have no concept of technology beyond the cockpit, but think they are technological wizards because they have a home network.

But my family is awesome. We don't want for much of anything, other than more time together.
