To Boot or Not to Boot? That IS the Question.

After years of problem-free upgrading and a fully functional PC, I have now encountered a minor issue with my dear desktop computer.

My best guess is lack of wattage,amperage or voltage (Nexus 400W NX-4090), but I'd like to hear a second (and third etc.) opinion on the matter from the savants of tech here at bf2s.com.

Symptom 1
Computer starts up, runs boot screen, all is well. Monitor goes black and on standby (green light turns orange). No processor activity.

Symptom 2
Startup, main boot screen, windows boot screen, freeze. Monitor stays on, the little green bar below the XP-logo stops moving

Symptom 3
Boot-loop, one time only, then to the "Windows was bla bla bla" and selection screen if I want to boot in failsafe mode or not.

Pre-symptom upgrades
- Upgraded from Athlon64 3200+ to Athlon64 4000+. s939 Motherboard
- Added also 500Gb Samsung SataII HDD (3rd Master)

Rig specs here

After a succesful boot
The system is running fine. No freezing, nothing. Games work, all high on BF2, Portal runs well. Nothing, and I mean nothing is wrong. Temperatures are good, both GPU and CPU.

So, my question is: OMGWTFBBQ?

Hm. If it does work fine when you put load on it, it kinda rules out the PSU... At least the 12v rails. Could be 5 or 3.3v, though, it might not be able to handle the load of that new HD and CPU from a cold start.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. +5v and +3.3v are very weak on it. Combine that with a cold start, and you've got some overload. Get a new one, like the 500w Chieftech DU got. <50€, and enough power to last you long.

Aww man.. Again with the investments. It's a damn shame, the Nexus is a decently quiet and reliable PSU. Besides, it's a bitch to replace now that I have the Scythe ultramegacoolertowerblaster in the way (Nothing compared to your Gemini, as we have established).

What do you think about this one?

On a side note here: Are you sure it's green? Because then you might want to install an XP service pack or 3.
(Green bar was used pre-SP1 for home edition as far as I know)

So, problem solved, I think.

So, the problem was that the CPU volts were too weak from the PSU. Well, that was Freezers diagnosis (Upgrade from 3200+ (@2.0Ghz) to 4000+ (@2.4Ghz) single core). So yesterday I decided to make time for a PSU organ transplant and went shopping for a PSU. Jimms PC-store (the place I usually visit) was having an inventory day, so the f**kers had closed. I smoked a cig on their parking lot and went to another place.

"It seems that we're all out of high wattage PSU:s at the moment. All we have is 350W and lower. Come back thursday", they said. Oh hell no! What is this, the Soviet Union? But then I saw it, a used X2 4200+ for my old-school socket 939. I had heard legends of these rare pieces roaming around without a home. Sure, a 4800+ would've been awesome, but the day I find one at a reasonable price, is the day I win the lottery. The price for this one was 80€. Quite expensive, but that's the going price for rarities, I guess (In comparison, a socket AM2 X2 5000+ is at 77€, new).

What I noticed was that the clock speed for the dual core processor was 2200Mhz, compared to 2400Mhz on my 4000+ single core. "Can't hurt to try, and besides it's much better than the one I have". So I bought it for 15 € and gave away my old 939 4000+ and 3200+ processors to them to cover the difference. I can't be bothered to ebay them for an actually good price, so what the hell, right?

200Mhz less made the difference. The PC boots fine now. Can you tech-savants confirm that this in fact is a possibility?

If I ever plan to overclock, I need a new PSU, though.

A 2200MHz dual uses more power than a 2400MHz single. Maybe your old CPU was just bad.

Yep, perhaps you just got a botched CPU in the first place.

By the way, the 4200+ is...wonderful. Take it up to 3.0 GHz on air, on nothing but a FSB raise.
