This was posted on a Slovenian news site so I'll try to translate to my best abilities.

American authorities struck on privacy of tourists that visit USA with a new law that allows the border patrol to copy content of your laptop from people that come to visit USA. But the law will be hard to do since theres so many people with a laptop on travels nowadays. Customs officer, border patrol officer will be able to copy the content of the HDD of every stranger that enters USA. This will make waiting lines on the airports even longer.
So advice is to copy all important data from your HDD so it doesn't get in their hands because it may damage the disk.

If you can cite the source, that'd be a good read..to see what "american authorities" would degrade the constitution even more by doing such a thing.

This is old and yes they're doing it.  My cousin had his laptop checked at the customs.

Yeah I read an article about it a while ago. Pointless and an inconvinience for everyone, especially companies.

They force you to give up your passwords. TrueCrypt however, offers a way around this by putting a hidden folder inside the hidden folder.

EDIT: An article on it

It's pointless, they won't gain anything from it. All that happens is terrorists know not to bring their laptop with them when they're going to blow shit up. It wastes the time of the security officials and the passengers, and even more of the taxpayers money.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Ame … nstitution

Aside of the unconstitutional ruling the SCOTUS recently gave allowing searching without probable cause ("security" at the cost of liberty as usual), it is unconstitutional (violates 4th and 14th amendments) to copy data belonging to someone without cause.  Sure it's not on paper, but such electronic data is the same thing, obviously.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Do they honestly check every single laptop? I could imagine this being a decent idea if they had a "suspect" traveler and wanted to gather a bit more info on him, but for every person? Too much time and money wasted.

Why don't these berks spend the money on something like those super X-ray machines they made that let you see through freakin' clothes? Shit that makes me want to join the TSA... just hope you don't get any trogs walking through the x-ray.

Yeah I heard about this. Just massively encrypt your shit or don't bring it with you. It sucks, but we're paranoid as ever these days and the 9/11 terrorists are to blame for that.

You can't, the ask for all your passwords and presumably if they don't work they arrest you until you tell them.

As I understood it, they take (or can do so) all your electronics off you. Cell phones, iPods etc.

Seriously, mail a dvd disk to your intended destination with any terrorist data on it..  WHat are they hoping to do?  Copying hard drives is about as good at stopping turrists as is preventing nail clippers or breast milk on airplanes.
