Uh..........no.  For a period after they were kicked out of the ME they were despised due to the fact that they were:

a)  Foreigners

and

b)  Merchants/bankers/lawyers, which tended to be disliked.

You know what I find funny: people tend to ignore the fact that other similar groups, like gypsies, were treated as bad/worse.
