Fixing my dad's laptop as it's going slow. Reason: 512MB ram only (XP) but okay, it's around 300 MB idle now (cleaning up start programs etc), so still fast enough.

When I start up IE7 though (the browser he always uses), the iexplorer.exe process uses 97MB idle. This is just google opened in one window. When I browse it jumps to 110MB, opening another tab -> 127MB and then I've been surfing for 10s.

(Even FF2.0 which is so called "memory eating" only uses 68MB on my computer with 2 windows and 6 tabs open.)

So in no time the memory exceeds the amount of memory, causing the laptop to start disk-writing and slowing down.

Anyone knows a fix for this? I googled a while, tried the no add-ons. It opens on 25MB then on the about:no-addons page, but when I browse to google, again 97MB.

I installed FF3 beta5 on it now, (best memory browser currently available) and that uses less than 15MB on two tabs.

Problem is that my dad is used to IE and I think a few sites he uses for work are ie-only based, and probably still gonna use that more than FF.  (gonna try telling him though) so trying to find a fix anyway.

Installing SP3 in the hope that fixes it, but if anyone has a better idea?

(no: install FF or Opera please, I have it installed but it would be nice to have a normal functioning IE without having to reformat.)

IE is just bigger than FF because it's chock full o' features. Them's the breaks. SP3 will not change that. Your only hope is to add more memory to the laptop.
