My router will not let me forward ports. I have a fixed local IP, but no matter what my ports remain closed to anything I throw at them (www.canyouseeme.org/, http://66.134.89.225/~sic/nettest.html, http://www.whatsmyip.org/ports/, etc)

It's an Asus wl-530g, latest firmware.

Also, why the hell do I have "port range" AND "local port"? Every other router I've seen just has one box for the port

yeah, somehow they've got a different port forwarding screen than for my router. Notice how they only have to choose the port once? (and yes, I am very sure that I have a wl-530g )

So you can contact port 5000 via the internet but it actually is port 4000 on your machine. This is sometimes VERY usefull, especially with multiple computers with webservers or Remote Desktop Connection.

Do you have a software firewall on e.g. Symantec, McAfee, etc.?  Firewalls will also block ports.

nope, I've had this problem on XP and now on Vista, right now I have nothing but the vanilla windows security and even that is off.

You don't have tools such as PeerGuardian on do you?  I have other websites for that port forwarding but it is on my home pc and I am at work.  I'll post some links when I get home.

No tools, absolutely nothing like that.

are you sure your ISP isn't doing any blocking of their own?  i know AT&T blocks port 25 to prevent mail bots.  you have to call them to get the port opened.

Blocking port 25 will block your mail as well as mail bots won't it? Or do the assume no one uses SMTP?

POP3 is more popular apparently.

well all mail protocols use smtp port 25 for sending, unless you use a secure mail connection (443 i think?).  but basically that means you cannot send mail from an client based email program like outlook or eudora.  if you a web-based email client like yahoo or google you're fine.  i found this out after all but pulling my hair out with a user from my work.  she could send no problems from inside the company, but at home none of her mail would be delivered, even though she could receive (incoming mail is a different port.)  we finally figured she would have to connect to the vpn system first so she could then just route mail through the company servers, but its pretty slow tbh.  after fighting with att for a while, they finally opened the port for her system.

You don't really send mail with POP.

I don't remember saying this.    This is what happens when you leave something open and walk away with a bunch of crazy people at work.

I doubt my ISP is blocking every port on the list in the image I posted, and every other port I have tried in the past.

go to this website: http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-scanner/ and enter the IP of your modem.  it will remotely port scan your shit and tell you what's open.  if that site doesn't work, there are tons more out there.  just search for "online port scan" and find one that will scan your modem remotely.

and in that screenie you provided, it says you are enabling NAT which is a more advanced form of port forwarding.  it will forward requests made to well-known ports to a custom port you define.  in most cases that isn't necessary unless you are going for high security.  your router should have some way of just forwarding ports on itself to the same port on your PC.

oh noes I posted my IP, I'll get hacked, etc.

anyway, as you can see every single port isn't responding. Could some other dudes who are behind a router that is shared by multiple computers take this test and post their results?

Do you reckon the IT guys at my uni will go nuts if I try to get all my ports scanned whilst behind their network?

if their firewall is not retarded it will start to drop the probes, thus rendering the scan pointless.  it may even go as far as blocking the originating IP of the scan.

well at the very least we know either your router or your ISP is blocking these ports.  is there a way to actually turn off the firewall on your router?  (just for testing purposes.)  try it and run the scan again.

Strange.  I know my port forwarding works because I download music and other things that require ports to be open for a specific program such as utorrent.

Bah, my utorrent was working fine too before I tried these ports today. I needed them for Hamachi. Even though I had no ports fake-forwarded uTorrent said everything was fine and I was getting great speeds too

EDIT: mysterious, after resetting my router, uTorrent is working and the port it uses (24238) is cleared on all those test sites, but only when utorrent is running. I have not done anything to forward 24238, it is a random port utorrent chose when I installed it.

thats thanks to the UPnP service.

again the UPnP service is why utorrent is working.  but now it seems you have a clean slate to start with on your router since you reset it.  go into the port forwarding area and add a port.  it should work the way its supposed to.
