I was on Wikipedia reading about the Dreamcast, and well i came across this..

'Dreamcast sales grew 156.5% from July 23, 2000 to September 30, 2000 putting Sega ahead of Nintendo 64 in that period. For the month of November 2000, Dreamcast passed the Nintendo 64 as the second best selling system.During that time, the PlayStation 2 was plagued by production shortages, with people often paying in excess of $1000 on eBay for Sony's next-generation console.

However, Dreamcast's online capabilities through SegaNet, and a price cut around the second half of 2000 (which made it half the price of the PS2) did little to help sales once the PlayStation 2 was launched. American public attention also noted[citation needed] the Playstation 2's much hyped graphics and its ability to play DVDs, as it cost less than a standalone player at the time.'

To me this sounds exactly like the current situation of console wars.

And i think history will repeat itself, Anyone else agree?

Depends, the ps2 didn't get raped in the arse by the other two consoles as much as the wii is raping this generation.

Also the ps2 launched with loads of big games (MGS2, FFX, GT, WWE smackdown), the ps3 has taken ages to start releasing the killers and is starting from well behind.

The only people actually left to buy a ps3 are 1) people who already have a wii/xbox and 2) pc gamers who don't hate consoles. The ps2 was always in demand and people were willing to wait a month or two for it to sort itself out.

With the death of HD-DVD, Blu-ray is the only HighDef product out there for DVD's which is coincidentally own by Sony.  Giving the fact that it is much cheaper to buy a PS3 than a standalone Blu-ray DVD ala buying a PS2 for its DVD player vice paying for a standalone DVD player, it doesn't surprise me how things are going now.  The PS2 got off to a really slow start just like the PS3 but it became the no.1 console and it looks like the PS3 is that repeating history.
