And...the house (or senate) just passed the "FARM" bill...which is really a welfare bill.  $400B is going towards food stamps and other welfare, while a mere $40B is going to subsidy farmers under certain incomes ($500k and $750k)..and another 1% of something going towards food aid internationally.

THink I'ma get me an EBT card and live off welfare too!  Better than using it for war...which our awesome dem congress vowed to stop funding in 2009 (like they promised in 2006 when they got elected)! lol

lol, odb is was a piece of shit, IMO.

Anyway. Well payed OH  .But from what I understand this "stimulous package" is basically your 2009 tax return given to everyone now.  So we'll see where that money came from when those tax returns come back and are only a few pennies.  Well, form what I understand.

You however, probably won't have to worry about that, ya jerk
from what I understand, it has no effect on next years tax return.

That's right.  I've got four kids which means that I get a $4000 tax credit to offset other income, and most of my income gets sheltered thanks to US tax loopholes ... and I just got an $1,800 economic stimulus payment.

This means that I paid negative federal taxes this year.  I received money from the US government.

What is amazing is that I live in the region of the US with the highest average income (Fairfax County, VA), I own a $750,000 home, I drive relatively new cars, and I'm putting four children through private school ... yet, now I'm on welfare.

The United States is screwed.
I hope that house is already paid off, because based on your credits aren't being phased out by income level you have to be house-poor servicing than mortgage.

If you are paying that mortgage, how the hell did the bank allow that size loan on your income level?
you think maybe he could have bought it when it was value much lower.   the house I live in was worth $80,000 when it was first bought.  Today, its worth $600,000, without even being fully appraised.
I'm looking at the tax credits & stimulus payment to figure out about how much he makes and comparing it to the home value.  Servicing a $400k mortgage would be painful.

But putting that aside, he's talking about paying "additional" tax with the tax return, when in fact its collected every time you get a paycheck.  So he probably paid between $22k-$28k (after rebates & credits) but is happy because he got a refund.

If you can afford $750K, that will get you a very nice home in my neck of the woods.  Something like this.

Nah ... my mortgage is 130K (land cost ... built the house myself) ... the only federal taxes I paid in 2007 were gas taxes and self-employment  taxes (SS & Medicare).

I think we should limit child tax credits to the first 2 kids.  There's really no need to subsidize having more than 2 per family.

You are raising four fine young children that will help win the fight against communism.

Seriously though, the taxation system needs to be simplified. The complexity does nothing but encourage people not to go through the hassel of paying taxes and creates loopholes like this one. Not a flat tax system or the like, but surely a much more efficient system could be thought up. Ask Google or something.

A flat income tax or the Fair Tax could work, but only if, beforehand, government spending was drastically reduced.  Since such reductions in spending are very unlikely, we're basically stuck with a corrupt bracket system.

Seriously, the 1000 per kid tax credit combined with the Earned Income Credit (EIC) is nothing more than IRS welfare.  For so many middle class families, the child tax credit eliminates their taxes, and the EIC gives them a welfare check.

(I don't qualify for EIC, but I help a number of families who do, so I see the results).

I like Canada's approach.  I'm not sure how their tax credits work, but they have a higher income threshold for the income tax.  In other words, you can make more money there than here before you reach a level of income eligible for federal taxation.  We need to up our income tax threshold, so that we pander less with subsidies and deductions.

The average home in the US is something like $250k to $300k ... where I live, it is something like $500k.

My home is a 3500 sqft Victorian on 3/4 acres in a highly desirable area of Fairfax County - one of the wealthiest (if not close to the wealthiest) regions of the world.  I may be underestimating the value of my home.  Larger homes just around the corner have sold for as much as 1.6 million.

The home is not the issue ... the issue is that the US government has someone like me effectively on welfare.

You only got a $1800 stimulus package? I have 4 kids and got a $2400 stimulus package. I must need more welfare than you. Oh, and I also got back more at tax time than what I payed in. Benefits of being a single earner family and having the wife stay at home with the kids.

Seriously though, I don't think anyone should get back more in taxes than what they pay in. If you take your exemptions and owe nothing, fine. But you shouldn't get 2 grand back just because you have two more kids than your neighbor down the street.

If you're lucky enough to be Alaskan, there's no income tax, plus you get a check from the State sharing oil revenue.

Dad: $600
Mom: $600
Per kid: $300

So single Dad = $600 + $300 x 4 = $1,800
