(Fun Fact: “Reformed” Mormons might not like it, but it could be said that those people, however benighted, and unquestionably victims and perpetrators of what right-thinking people would call abuse, were true Latter-Day Saints. They remained faithful to the divine revelations preached, and practised, by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young—that God commanded the men to have multiple, ever-younger wives. In order to achieve statehood, back in 1896, the “reformed” church put those inconvenient truths aside. Sometimes even divine revelations have to bow to good business.)

He is actually considered quite the genius. The guy is good; He has enough political clout to interview Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien. http://www.rushisaband.com/video.php?id=1185

If the guy is generally considered a genius does this not lend credibility to the FDLS?

Intelligence does not necessarily denote correctness, the smarter people are the better they are at rationalizing, and being extremely stubborn in their ill-gotten beliefs. I refer you to my sig.

Neil Pert is a fucking amazing drummer, but that doesn't mean that his insane religious beliefs mean anything.

PS. Mike Portnoy is still better.

You're really desperate to defend the actions of child molesters, aren't you?

Look, I know we have a rather volatile disagreement on this issue, ATG, but using random banterings by talented (but apparently misguided) musicians doesn't really solidify your point of view.

The point is this...  Times change, and people must adapt.  Outdated beliefs should not be defended when they cross lines that have been determined as unacceptable by proper society.  It is no longer acceptable to have multiple wives, and there are a lot of practical and psychological reasons for not allowing it.  There are also a myriad of reasons not to allow grown men in their 30s and 40s the legal ability to knock up 14 year olds or to molest their male peers.

So, no...  your post does not validate the FLDS anymore than the ramblings of radical Imams validate Wahhabism as an acceptable ideology for subduing Western, free societies with.

There are certain lines that must be drawn when it comes to the freedom of religion, because too many things in the past have been allowed to go on with the convenient excuse of "but it's part of my religion."  Child molestation is but one of them (which the Catholic Church also needs to deal with or face more investigations and more embarrassment), and we both know of the most extreme cases of abuse that occur in the Islamic World under the guise of Sharia Law.

You're really desperate to paint with a broad brush, aren't you?

Some polygamist are child molesters, most are not.

Times don't change, people demonstrate a lynch mentality; easily the mob is raised and ever mostly blind in it's wrath.
Child molestation, bah, you are demonstrating a rare sort of ignorance to equate my arguments for religious freedom with advocacy for child molesters.

My point is, as Mr. Peart points out, the FDLS are the real Mormons. He is generally considered to be a genius, and not just on drums. What are you? What am I?

Any autistic nitwit can be a musical genius.  How does Peart's ability to keep rhythm make him any kind of authority on anything but taught leather and sticks?

One of the innumerable reasons the Mormon cult is such a fucking joke is the fact that they compromised their cornerstone beliefs to gain statehood.

What an incredible insight.  Next he'll be telling us that fire is hot and canned peas aren't as good as fresh peas.

Do they hand out Nobel Prizes for non-autistic genius drummers.

Joseph Smith and Brigham Young
And why would people believe them? Idiots, that's why. The same idiots who believed Muhammad, the same idiots who believed in all these other morons in history.

When Michael and I visited Nauvoo, Illinois, last summer, we genuinely admired the life-size equestrian statue depicting Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum riding to the courthouse in Carthage, knowing they rode to their deaths. (They could as easily have escaped West, and abandoned their people to an increasingly-violent struggle with the neighboring “Gentiles,” but as Wallace Stegner pointed out about Joseph Smith, “whatever he was, he was not a scoundrel or a coward.”)

Both are great drummers. However they are not the best. Billy Coban is by far the greatest drummer alive today. Vincent colaiuta isn't far behind Coban either. Get Cobans solo albums. Some of the best funk groves ever.

Tell me, what is the advantage of allowing polygamy?  Have a look at the cultures that currently permit it.  Do you really think that they are pleasant and free nations to live in?

Your religious freedom ends where rational society begins.  There is nothing rational about indoctrinating children into an isolated community that pretends it's the 1800s.  I'm sorry if you feel that is encroaching upon your religious freedom, but I consider it encroaching upon the delusions of madmen and sparing children from their depradations.

I'll tell you what you are.  You're someone who needs a random famous person to validate your origins.  You've obviously let your history with this group affect your judgment, and until you realize that, I will continue to browbeat you with it.

Maybe someday you'll realize that you're no longer part of that psychosis that is conveniently referred to as a religion and that you're better off no longer a part of it.  Tormenting yourself over a perceived violation of the freedom of religion does you no good, and it does society no good to permit these cults.  As many others have begrudgingly pointed out here, mainstream society has a way of eventually ending these foolish cults through exposure to all that they are depriving themselves of, so I don't see any problem with accelerating this process if it benefits future generations and eliminates isolated environments that are all too easy for abuses to occur in.

Only on BF2s.com could you have a thread simultaneously arguing the validity of a religion and it's most righteous founders and who the most righteous rock and/or musical drummer of all time is/was.  God Bless, Chuy...but has it become what you envisioned.

At the OP....ATG, I have to disagree with you... the measure of intelligence does not equate to the measure of validity.  Einstein had as many theories/ideas that were incorrect as he did that were correct.  But then again, he was an alien....and in his day...one of the world's greatest heavy metal drummers!  HA!

What does that tell you about genius!
