I really don't give a fuck if there's a Bible in the bedside table, but I can't know there's one until I get the room.  Would you feel ok if they had dildos in the room, it's private property.
I'm sure there's hotels out there that don't have a bible in the room, just like there's hotels out there that have dildos in the room.

My opinion:
Hotels rooms are gross.  I wouldn't want to hold a blacklight to the Motel 6 bible.  I'm not using the hotel dildo or hotel bible if it's provided.  The only difference is weight in my book.

Television and certain types of draperies offend me also. All hotel rooms should be white (debatable) empty rooms

Besides the hotel owner doesn't put them there. If you are condiment in what you believe who cares who leaves what in the room (barring used sexual items)
Condiment?

Yes, if you are that bored and looking through the drawers, and find a bible and start reading it, WHY are you in a hotel?

Usually I just leave it as it were in the drawer.

Though it is just a book to me, it is a holy book to some.
I would treat it with respect as I would with my Quran.

I prefer it to be on request to have any holy book as as somebody had mentioned, the hotel may not know the religion or lack of it, of the guest.

I couldn't care less - in the worst case scenario I read it when I've got nothing better to do. I still think a lot of the values it preaches are worth learning, even if I am atheistic.

I couldn't care whatsoever.  It doesn't offend me and I can simply ignore the bible.  That way a religious person can still have access to it.  I wouldn't want to put someone else out just because of my athiest views.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Wow, astounding!  In one thread, many of you are making fun of muslims and their reaction to the desecration of the koran being done by americans and telling them to chill out, then in this thread you're getting all flaming mad and anal about a bible being in a drawer of your hotel room that somehow offends you and pisses you off?

For what it's worth, the bibles (usually just new testaments) have helped more people than it's offended.  And honestly how many people does it really offend?  I don't like the rabid availability of porn in hotel rooms and appreciate hotels that do not offer it, but i'm not going to be foaming at the mouth mad about it..or "offended" by it?  What's odd is the hotel's catering to both crowds...the bible AND the porn for both types of customers! lol

Certain areas of the world don't bathe that much. Why should they be paying for soap?
Certain hotels don't provide soap... what is your point.
99 percent of the ones here do in the states. I guess I made the mistake of assuming hygenie was a factor everywhere in the world .Why should the touristy non bathing foreigners be forced to pay for soap they don't use when they come stink up our beaches (the ones that don't use soap that is)? Got it?

I was unaware that soap was considered "a la catre" in Australia..lol

"99 percent of the ones here do in the states." I doubt that.

And last time I checked you don't 'pay' for a bible (or soap) to be there, it just is (or isn't). I still don't see your point or why it in any way relates to what I wrote.

Gee I think my experience trumps yours in regards to hotels in the states.

The point was why pay for stuff you don't use?

As others have said, it's the choice of the hotel owners what to do with the free Bibles provided by Gideons.  Most owners either don't know or don't care that Gideons leave them there.

It doesn't seem like a big deal to me, and I'm one of the most vocal atheists here.

Since he's charging it to my credit card, it's not private property while I'm paying for it.
Uhhh I hope your not serious. Renting is not buying. You have to abide by the owners rules when you rent their place serge. Don't like it, don't stay.

Who cares?

If someone is lame enough to read a bible in a hotel they're usually lame enough to bring their own.

As I've never been to America, I'm sure your 'experiences' do trump mine. But I'm also almost positive the range of hotels available in America (like every other country I've been too) range from the dead basic, Just a bed, to the exotic, private house and everything in between. Which would include the likes shared bathroom facilities where hotels do not supply soap or towels.

Firstly, the hotels don't charge you extra because there is a bible there.
Secondly, they don't buy the bibles but they are given them by Gideons International.
Thirdly, if bibles were removed from hotels do you think you will be charged any less per night, and if you were (which is ludacris) how much do you think it would be? 3 cents a night... woopdy fucking doo!
And fourthly, I could use the same logic for everything in a room.
"I didn't walk over that bit of carpet"
"I didn't use that pillow"
"I didn't use the cupboards or draws"
"I didn't use the clock"
"I didn't use (insert anything)"

I want the room for cheaper.... seriously... grow up.

Unless it's provided free of charge, otherwise the cost of the bibles (or whatever other religious text) is passed onto hotel patrons.

However I could dig a book of Zen koans on the bedside table. Radness would abound.

I didn't make myself clear.  I read it out of curiosity, I'm not religious.  I read it and I found it boring indeed.

I remember taking the book a few times just coz I don't know much about Christianity, and coz I was bored or couldn't sleep, or Tv sucked.  I don't get what you don't understand.

I put no, but it's because of semantics. Should they put a Bible in there? No, they don't have to. But honestly I don't care if they do... just so long as they don't have any problem if I want to make a company to distribute Qu'rans and Torahs and they'd have to put them in there... oh and I'm also going to publish a Satanist book and they have to put those in there as well.

It's all or nothing really. Either they allow putting all kinds of religious material, or they put none, zero, zip, nada. At least that way it'll keep things as fair and equal as possible.
