It seems that the US is trying to emulate our good friends in the Middle East on how to deal with sexuality in media. We can have Jack Bauer going around shooting terrorists and torturing people (not necessarily saying there's anything wrong with that) but the moment a bare woman's ass or breast appears on TV, there's a huge fucking uproar. You can have brutal violence in movies and people won't care, but if it's got sex and nudity then people get all angry. What the fuck?

For example, video games. You're all probably familiar with Jack Thompson (if not, he's a crackpot lawyer who hates GTA games, he thinks they're the worst thing to happen to kids since polio)... in the latest installment of GTA, he was once again angry. Why? There was a video on IGN that showed just general gameplay, including both shooting random folks and picking up hookers and getting lapdances or something. Guess what Thompson was mad about? Yeah.

Or Soul Calibur 4. They may just be virtual titties, but this webpage speaks for itself: http://kotaku.com/391421/namco-bandai-i … t-cover+up

This post on Digg sums it up well:
We, as Americans, are just conditioned to be far more comfortable with violence than with sexuality. Of course, I'm just speaking in general terms. But as an example, let me put forth my own family. I had heard a lot of good reviews, both personal and professional, about the Showtime series the Tudors. So I got the first season on DVD through Netflix.

My wife, myself, and my in-laws are all sitting around the tele. Within the first five minutes we see a man brutally stabbed in the gut by several men. He collapses and bleeds out on the marble floor. Within the next 15 minutes there's a sex scene with breasts and King Henry VIII spreading a womans thighs and my wife and her parents are literally squirming uncomfortably in their seats, clearing their throats and exchanging glances.

Savage murder barely raises any concern. But bare breast and thigh, and you'd think someone was pouring cold water in everyone's lap. Amazing, really.
Anyone from Europe wanna tell us how it is over there? Do people in Europe get all uppity when there's nudity?

Religion. Christianity/Islam are violent religions that glorify violence and deplore sex and the like, and their history shows that. The religious right in the US and in the Middle East are becoming more powerful by the year. So that's why you get what's going on.

Over here, we're much more relaxed on both issues. Europe has had enough violence for a lifetime so generally speaking it's viewed worse than sex. Which makes more sense.

Although, the US isn't that bad. They don't seem to really deplore sex except in the media, there are much worse countries out there when it comes to this sort of thing. But like I said the religious right are gaining more power and so their voice is being heard more often.

In the US people fear a liberal attitude toward sex.
Just look at all the Congressmen that have fallen out of the closet lately.
If the US opened up on sex, imagine how many others are out there.

Plus, the churches like to control you by the wee wee and tell you what is acceptable bedroom behavior. man and a woman in marriage yadda yadda yadda... its practically the only thing that religions have that they can hold over us and they are fighting to keep that control.

I have a friend whose pastor told her to give up her vibrator for jesus... now if that's not ridiculous!!!
Churches have no business trying to control you in your bedroom.

The muslim countries and the US religions have one thing in common, they try to control sexuality by denying it, this in turn makes the people who listen to them crazy for lack of sexual release and causes these people to become even more susceptible to the crazy religious messages.

There is something to the saying "got you by the balls"

Blame America's Puritanical heritage and the Religious Right.

Groups like the Catholic League, the American Family Association, and the Family Research Council are the idiotic lobbyist groups that want to promote a nanny state in media via the FCC.

In my personal opinion, I think the powers granted to the FCC are a blatant violation of the First Amendment.  But hey, religious conservatives who claim to be for smaller government are ok with the nanny state when it comes to social issues.

I think the US and UK age ratings for Mass Effect really say something.

In the US it's M. What is that, 16+? 18? I don't actually know but I know its fairly high. Anyway. The UK version is a 12.

I saw the results of a poll not that long ago that I found quite disturbing. A far higher percentage of parents in the US would rather see a graphic severed head in a videogame than 2 men kissing.

The 'rating' system is not comparable between countries. Each country has their own ratings board and judge things appropriately. Your 'M' may be lower then Australia (and America) but a movie rated M in the UK may be rated PG (a lower rating) in Australia. Also the reason things are rated the way they are, differ from culture to culture. ie. One country may say something has 'high sexual references' and rate it accordingly, but another country may not.

Um...isn't Europe predominantly Christian? It's not like the US has cornered the market on Christianity or anything?

It's not taken as seriously over here anymore compared to over there. Unlike in the US, Religion seems to be taking a downturn here. Whereas imo, the Religious Right in the USA are getting stronger every year.

Hell, Christianity is actually the UK's state religion, wheras the US has no official religion. Yet I can assure you the US is much, much more deeply religious than the UK.

Wasn't the USA founded on the basis of Christianity? I mean, all the "before god", "under god" etc. stuff really makes it seem like it.

You can't deny the massive influence. If you don't have a christian faith you have zero chances in the US elections, for example. In Europe atheism is more likely to get you the position.

The Religious Right are slowly taking over the nation.  There's no way to get them to shut up, honestly.  Europe has a higher percentage of atheists, who are generally more rational, but America has around 4% or so.  It honestly sucks.  We have all these idiots who want to impose the ten commandments on the population, who want to make homosexuality illegal.

The FCC is slowly making tv suck for me.  The only show that can give me a boner is the Girls Next Door.  The FCC needs to be eliminated.  I doubt that if the FCC were eliminated, NBC wouldn't have "Law & Order sex orgie" or something, they could just have normal diologue, IE words like fuck, etc.  There would be some harcore cable porn though

What are you talking about? Obama and Hillary aren't Christians (Stand for abortion, gay rights, etc. that are against the Bible) and McCain hasn't made any statement that he's a Christian.

The Crusades were faught more for plunder than for relgion. Most of the guys fighting them just wanted gold and a greater percentage of the kings leading them just wanted the gold.

You'll find that most conflicts supposedly about religion are really about money.
