There have been no refineries built in 35 years.
There are no NUCLEAR DESALINATION plants in the works even has our water supplies head into a death spiral, and each party bitches about global warming.
You can thank the environmentalists for that stupidity.  They oppose nuclear power and drilling/refining when there is no other viable alternative.

But, republicans held the house and senate for the first half of the disasterous Bush presidency.
Bush issued signing statements passing all kinds of garbage into law in the dead of night, there is no blaming lack of leadership on liberals, he could have signed an order and created the power plants. Why the hell not? That's how he does things.

After more than five years in combat in Iraq funding for the wars is still not counted in the budget.

That'd be like you buying a new RV and not making payments.

cool, you must be a cultured individual mate. You base your obvious political stance on physical attraction, which as we all know determines ones qualifications as a civic leader.

Sarcasm aside, that sort of thinking is the reason that buffoons get elected. Your post may be a jest, but I'd rather have someone who can do the job instead of a dimwitted model as my leader. Sorry, I just don't vote with my genitals or find it particularly funny that you align yourself with a party that was in the driver seat when our economy was RAPED. Also, rushing us into a war that has killed more Americans than 9/11 (not to mention the 1 million + Iraqis.) Sigh, it's just incredible how the political issues are constantly overshadowed by silly social nonsense...black...woman...abortion...gay marriage...etc. Those issues don't mean shiz if the average Joe can't put food on his table or make it to work.

tbh, regardless of what section we're in, its terribly obvious that picture is screaming propaganda, and someone to actually scrutinize it makes the whole situation...well...a failure.

The president cannot sign a power plant into operation.  Why?  EPA and the coup environmentalist activists have achieved in the courts regarding building coal or nuclear power plants ... conveniently bypassing the people's elected leaders to get their agenda in place.  I agree the Reps should have done more, much more.  But every measure they bring to the floor regarding this is vigorously opposed by the Dems because the environmentalists are part of their voting base.  So what could they really have accomplished?  And just wait until the envirowackos push the EPA to label carbon dioxide as a pollutant.  The economic fun really begins then.

America needs a credible third party. Not a personality like Nader, but a proper political party with serious aspirations.

The two main parties would fight it and do everything in their power to discredit them.

This is a major democracy issue that should be sorted out before fixing other countries lack of democracy.

The aspirations of all third parties here are serious...at least to the members of those parties.

It's not a democracy issue. Those parties are free to organize and campaign. It's not the fault of the Republican and Democrat Parties (or the government at large) that the third party platforms don't gain traction with the populace.

As an outsider, it seams like Nader is portrayed in the media as a laughing stock, a bit of a joke. As like all press they lean towards a particular party, usually one which has a good chance of winning. Like in the UK every paper is openly Conservative or Labour, with none supporting the Liberal Democrats. The Lib Dems are making considerable gains at the minute in the UK because the people don't like the direction Labour has taken us, yet remember what a mess the conservatives made the last time. The Lib Dems won't get in any time soon. But by making gains it forces the two main parties to change policies, polices which the people are crying out for. The third party acts like a morality check of sorts.

If its not the established parties or the populous, what is holding back the development of a credible 3rd alternative?

For what it's worth, I've always thought Ann looks like a tranny.  Note the similarities between her frame and face and Marilyn Manson.  I think the only reason I even noticed this was because Manson likes to go drag a lot -- oh and...  note Ann's Adam's Apple....   She's just generally creepy...

Ok...  back on topic...  It would be nice if some practical politicians entered office that both appreciated sensible protection of the environment and the growth of infrastructure to accomodate demand and sustainability.  It seems rare for someone to be simultaneously environmentally conscientious and economically practical.

If we had such people, we'd have a cleaner environment while still having more refineries and less foreign oil dependency.

Of course, thanks to lobbyists and activists, we're stuck in this Iraq/oil/debt quagmire.

Republicans, eager to blame the opposition need examine what they have done for our nation in the time they have held power.
Why would they do that?
They need the time to count the colossal amounts of money they made - and plan their board positions and speaking tours - which is why they got themselves elected after all.

It's not a democracy issue. Those parties are free to organize and campaign. It's not the fault of the Republican and Democrat Parties (or the government at large) that the third party platforms don't gain traction with the populace.
It must be related to the democratic system in the US - which is basically a two party state.
Other countries do fine with 3,4,5,6,7 parties.
First past the post means the winner takes all and the loser is nowhere - whoever comes third is lost.
Occasionally the loser might hold the balance of power if the parliament is close and representatives cross the floor but usually they don't so really they face four years unable to represent their constituents view.
Other democratic systems are 'fairer' but there is no perfect one I know of.

As was pointed out earlier, there are far more than two parties in the US. It's just that two parties dominate. If the third parties would come up with a platform that resonates as well with the populace as the Republican and Democrat platforms do, I'm sure they would have a better record.

I remember a similar situation happening in Star Wars, the government was too bloated, corrupt, and inefficient to prevent, or even take serious note of, any of the many problems occurring, and the people chose to consolidate under one charismatic ruler.

of course, that ruler turned out to be pure evil, but so did Hitler, who rose to power under similar circumstances.

i hate to make a Star Wars reference in D&ST, but it seems to be a theme in history that people confronted with pathetic, inefficient governments make a choice they soon regret (cue the Hitlers, Castros, Saddams, and Napoleons), I wonder who our poor choice will be...
This is a good example but the current times remind me more of what happened in atlas shrugged, be warned america, you do not want the men of mind to go on strike.
