The Northern Lights by Philup Pullman.
The Outsiders S. E. Hinton
Read it when I was a lot younger and can safely say that this book got me into reading in a big way.

Can't name only one... just can't:
1. Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide trilogy in four parts
2. Tolkien's Hobbit + Ring
3. Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles
Read hitchhikers at least five times, ring four times, and chronicles twice.
I have never laughed as much while reading than when it's Adams. Hitchhikers is hilarious, if you've only seen the movie then please... PLEASE read the books.

Of course best book I've read is the one I'm writing
Probably not my favorite book, but the one I think about the most-
Under and Alone by William Queen
There are better, more classic books out there, ones I would mention, but those are obvious. So, I say this one because it's just fucking nuts, and really entertaining. True story as well.

My two favorite books are Catcher in the Rye and 1984.
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
Flann O'Brien - the 3rd Policeman > every other book written eva!!!!

The Things They Carried was excellent (if a bit chaotic) read.
Also, I think The Great Gatsby was a great work.
Clancy is very entertaining, but there usually isn't the depth I look for in a "great piece of literature."
...so what if 1984 is overrated? It was a powerful piece of work!

The Iliad. My online name comes from that story. I liked Ajax over Achilles because Achilles is basically the ancient version of superman. Ajax was a mortal but a badass.
I've changed my mind... Ashley Cole's autobiography.
You won't regret it.M.O.A.B wrote:

I don't read many books, but One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, or Touching the Void are the best I've ever read. It's a tough decision for the best, but I'll have to go with Touching the Void. It's an amazing true story about a mountain climber's attempt to survive after so much shit happening to him that I can't even describe it. It's so dramatic and it sucks you right in. If you're too lazy to read, at least go see the movie.
