It seems that news reporters haven't caught up to the fact that Premium is a bit more expensive than Regular. So what are they referring to when they don't specify regular or premium or whatever?

It is regular, but the reports you are reading are not being complete ... AAA is usually the source of this info, and they measure average gas costs for at least two of the grades.

They also use the national average price, which is why it's not very relevant to many areas that are significantly lower or higher than the average.

Use gasbuddy.com instead.
