because i'm so used to the xx00 GX2/GTX/GTS/GT/GS config that anything else is just...not nVidia to me.  plus you wouldn't know it's a 9-series card.

you do. the 9900 is GT200 = 2x0 series. The 9900GT is probably GeForce GT 240. The next generation cards wil be 3x0 series. The old GTS/GT/GTX/Ultra 8800/9800 naming was dumb because there were totally different cards with pretty much the same name.

edit: remember how there were many 8800GTS cards?

at least following models:

8800GTS 320MB (G80)
8800GTS 320MB OC (G80)
8800GTS 640MB (G80)
8800GTS 640MB OC (G80)
8800GTS 640MB SSC with 112 SP(G80)
8800GTS 640MB SSC with 112 SP OC(G80)
8800GTS 512MB (G92)
8800GTS 512MB OC (G92)
etc...

that is what I would call confusing
