Before I go off to college, my parents agreed that they would buy me a new laptop, because mine is a 5 year old Dell, which is very slow and has a small hard drive. Anyway, so I'm debating between a pc and a mac. I want something that is reliable for work, like a lot of typing, constant internet use for research/work, something that won't crash, etc. I keep hearing how reliable macs are, and that you can even install Microsoft products (Microsoft Word) onto the mac osx. I may even want a laptop that provides enough power if I feel like relaxing and playing a good game or something once in a while. I've never owned a Mac before either. My price range, I believe could be anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. I made a poll here, so please choose one, and give an explanation as to why you think it would be best for me versus the opposite of what you have chosen. Thanks for your help in advance.

Do you do professional video or image editing? If so get a Mac, otherwise PC.
I don't do any of them.Vilham wrote:

If someone else is paying get mac. Girls will dig that.
Not to mention you can do what you want to do on anything.

or not. If you want to play all PC games you obviously need a PC, Macs have a VERY limited library, no game is programmed in java so its not like they release one disk for both systems. However macs do have better image editing and video editing suites, on a none professional basis there is NO point in getting a mac and sorry but girls simply don't "dig" macs any more than any other computer, they really dont care, trust me. I know a few very naive people who thought just that.jsnipy wrote:

PC wins 16-2
I am definitely leaning towards a pc as well, and some people's responses have left me with more confidence in my decision. Now if I were to buy a pc (laptop), which company would anyone here recommend?

To open, I've always bought Dells.dan673 wrote:

PC
Cheaper
Upgradeable
more software
better hardware
Mac
Better OS (excluding things like amount of compatable software, Mac's OS is better than Windows)
Smaller
meh.

15 more years! 15 more years!
No one does video or image editing on a laptop. No one with any sense anyway.Vilham wrote:

They both have their pluses.
PC - well, it's a PC. A wide variety of applications run on it and its customization is almost limitless. Is usually a lot cheaper and a nicely-made one can both perform and feel really good.
Mac - reliability, massively so. My brother's Macbook and Macbook air combined have crashed a total of...once. They are very sexy and you can get a really good Macbook Pro in that budget which means you could install Vista and do a bit of gaming on that 8400.
Tough choice - I know I'd get the mac over the PC for that price range, but that's just me...

Same here, infact I did it like a month ago. If you really want to game then you wont be looking at laptops, though if it is needed there are ways around it. I never had a mac before but I thought what the hell, there really nice machines, I dont quite see where all the fuss about them is but they do get a bit of attention and do feel like much more quality products rather than some shitty generic plasticy fucking thing, but that is dependant on what specific laptops you look at. For your casual web browsing, office work etc, its great. Also, a mac will tend to fetch a better resale on, say ebay than a comparible windows based machine. There could be lots of reasons to that, perhaps even there are just some fanboys out there willing to put up the money since its a mac, something you can cash in on at the other end.kylef wrote:

Actually I should probably add a small disclaimer there, thinking about it. It's crashed when overclocking, but that's to be expected.

"people in ny have a general idea of how to drive. one of the pedals goes forward the other one prevents you from dying"
I have never crashed my laptop (Windows XP Professional). My desktop has probably crashed about 2 or 3 times in the space of 1.5 years (Windows XP Professional x64). And those were all nvidia driver related crashes.kylef wrote:

You can have reliable PC's, but you just can't mess around with the configuration all the time. Granted, that can be hard to avoid on a windows machine, when everything requires administrator access to run properly.
