I remember asking this question a while ago, but can't find the thread with the answers in it haha. So I don't have an iPod, so is it still possible to buy music off iTunes and use it on my generic MP3 player?

Don't post replies such as: use limewire, download it for free etc. I want to do my part for the music industry.

I prefer iTunes over all music software, tbh.

Yeah, iTunes is pretty decent, I like it over everything else visually, and it's easy to use.

its actually a pretty decent media player, but it takes so much ram. tbh not really a problem unless your computer eats shit.

@OP: as long as you follow these steps you should be fine:

use the itunes + button when purchasing instead of the regular one. itunes plus uses no DRM.
make sure your current mp3 supports .m4a or else find software to convert to something lossy.

I prefer winamp as well.

I think iTunes is annoying and the fact that it uses a proprietary format drives me up the wall (m4a). I know a couple people that got burned because all their music was in shitty m4a and it's pretty difficult to find a program that will convert it to something else.

But, you're the one that'll have to deal with it, so go for it.

You know you can make iTunes import in many different formats, right?

I currently have a "master playlist" with my CDs imported as Apple Losless, and an "iPod playlist" with my CDs imported as 320kbps .mp3's

you may have to convert the files from an .m4a format, which can be difficult, thanks to some copy protection from the iTunes store.

Who the hell "buys" mp3's? Why not "aquire" them? Better yet, if you are in college, go to www.ruckus.com and you can download anything you want free. You just need a .edu email address.

I use iTunes and love it. I've bought more than a few songs off iTunes (only when I really can't find the actual CD or they don't have it on Ruckus as someone mentioned) and I'm able to put those songs on regular CDs or mp3 CDs/players. There are a few ways to remove the DRM iTunes puts on it.
1) Burn the song to an audio CD using iTunes, then just rip it back onto your computer.
2) [the way I do it] Get a program called "tunebite". It digitally records the song and gives you a copy in .mp3 format.

iTunes is great for organizing large libraries. I've got around 12,000 songs and I can easily navigate between all my albums and stuff. The smart playlists are pretty cool, but nowadays every media player has that.

Are you guys aware that if you right click a song in iTunes, there is an option to CONVERT to mp3 ...??? Has no one else here actually noticed that at all?

itunes is a pain.  I don't use Itunes. But my GF does.. it's invasive and acts like it's in charge of any media once it's installed.

But I am not a fan of ipods, or downloading music.. so I guess my opinion, in this case, is tech unfriendly.

your a moron, itunes can convert it... >.<

If you right click your song in itunes it has "Convert to AAC" AAC can be changed under Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Importing>Import Using>Whatever you want

Then re-right click the song, BAM! you can conver to the new selection.

I love itunes. Especially for easy Music dances or parties, set up the projector with the itunes visualiser, looks good enough...

Shon it once on a disco ball

Get teh limewire and YARRRR! (I know you said not to, but I haven't made a pirate reference yet today)

Seriously...iTunes is as good or better than any other software of its type. One thing Apple consistently does well is anything involving multimedia.
