Should I get a new DVD drive?

My current drive is on it's way out, but still works good enough to make it with. The main motivation for getting one is getting a cheap SATA drive, as my current IDE one looks shit with the huge IDE cable expanding in both ends.

On the other hand, I need to save my cash for a new CPU.

I'm clueless, what should I do?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

No, You can fold the IDE cable (I did it that too, I have dvd-writer and dvd-rom in master/slave) so it doesn't look nasty in your case. Saving up money for an better CPU is more worth it, an new dvd drive will only give you the eye candy for the sata cable when you look in your case... On the other hand: the CPU will give you an performance boost on your PC, so your pentium 4 won't be the bottleneck anymore.

New CPU > new SATA dvd drive only because the sata cable looks nicer.

Yeah, my cable is folded, even running behind the mobo. Looks shit when it has to extend to the connectors.

Otherways, your post is exactly what I'm thinking.

Decent light scribe SATA DVD-RW drive is less than £20. Get the DVD drive then its done and you don't have to bother upgrading it for long time to come. One less thing to worry about upgrading.

Just get it, its not as if the drive is going to take a massive chunk out of your CPU budget, although I understand your dilema.  Id get it if the cable is anoying you so much and the like you say it is on its way out so you will have to replace it at some point.

I would. They are cheap and have a smaller cable. Also don't regular IDE cables produce more heat?

You should learn the difference between "a" and "an". It's not that hard you know

No. If you are only getting it because you think the cable is ugly that is ridiculous...unless it actually dies, I'd just save your money. Better to buy 1 big thing at £100 than 10 little things at £10.
