1. I got a USB stick to fix from my friend. It's an 8GB keyring stick, http://www.pretec.com/epages/Store.stor … cts/B2UXXX

It worked fine, until one day my friend noticed windows say it contained several 100+ GB files, and thought something was wrong, so he formatted it. However the format was interrupted in some way and now the stick does not work. Windows recognizes it, but when you try to explore it or format it, windows freaks out:

I have tried formatting it from XP setup disk, but setup does not recognize it. Any halp?

2. I have an LG GSA-H12N that has worked just fine, but decided to go apeshit on me today. Windows sees it as DVD-RAM drive and it refuses to load CDs or DVDs. Funtctions right (opens and closes fine) but refuses to load. LG firmware updater does not recognize the drive. In Device manager windows sees the model right, but as said, as DVD-RAM drive. Same for bios. And it refuses to boot from XP CD as well.
Oh, and warranty is out. Was 12 months an this has been here for 14.

Any halp?

1. Try formatting from cmd prompt?

2. Uninstall drivers from device manager, reinstall drivers or let windows pick them.

1. As I thought:

Code:

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>format H:
Insert new disk for drive H:
and press ENTER when ready...
Cannot open volume for direct access.

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>
2. Already tried, didn't work

He chose 'format' in the right click menu in 'my computer'

I think that does FAT16 or FAT32

I suspect your DVD drive is pretty much on its last legs.  They do some weird shit when dead.  For example, mine would load CDs only, and spin way too much for the amount of work it was doing (just reading a disc, sounded like it was a jet engine or something).

I got a new SATA one to replace it with today, but the thing is I'd have use for this if it could be fixed
