  • Weird issue... (games locking up with a looping sound)

So, I was playing some Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas last night, and my computer locked up, with looping sound...
Did a hard reboot, no BSOD.

Then, later, I tried to play some BF2 with a clanmate, and I was having some weird random lag that was not normal, and that I have never had. Also, the sandbags became metallic...
Rebooted normally, no lock up.
Rejoined, and game locked up with looping sound... again.
Rebooted manually.
Game now lags like fuck when I turn the gun around, and lags when I get into confrontations.
I've been playing BF2 on high with 4AA for a while without this lag, until it locked up after GTA:SA.

Don't give me the fucking bullshit to turn my settings down, and say that my computer can't handle it at these settings, because it perfectly did so until the crash.

My setup is, pasted from my Xfire profile:

Manufacturer: Dell XPS 400 (Modified, as you can tell.)
Processor: Prescott Intel Pentium 4 540 3.20GHz HyperThreading
Memory: 2GB Kingston DDR2 667Mhz - Dual Channel (2x1GB)
Hard Drive: Western Digital 250 GB
Video Card: EVGA GeForce 7600GT (175.16 drivers.)
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit
Operating System: Windows XP Home SP3

Help is highly appreciated...

I am currently reinstalling the latest drivers for my 7600GT.

I already had the latest ones. 175.16
I did the following:
Uninstalled drivers from Add/Remove.
Rebooted.
DriverCleaner.
Rebooted.
Installed 175.16.
Rebooted.

I will now try to play BF2 again, with it optimizing shaders again...

Your drivers got corrupted. You reinstalled video drivers correct? If that doesn't help, reinstall audio drivers.

Didn't help after the reinstall, the lag just keeps getting worse, now its when I just try to play. Makes me feel like I underclocked my card to hell.
I'll give audio drivers a shot.

No, still lags as if I downgraded my computer.

I just played a full round of DoD:S without lag, or issues. Seems to be a Battlefield 2 issue. Figures. Reinstall and repatch?

Yeah, seems to be your best bet. Does it lag in GTA still?

Try re-patching first, it takes less time than doing both.

No, GTA has never given me problems until that crash, mentioned in first post. Re-installing as we speak. Thanks for the help, I'll repost when it is all done and tested! Wish me luck.

Nope, lag still exists, just in BF2...
Did a full reinstall and full repatch to 1.41, no avail.
Any ideas...?

Just as a test, try turning down the settings to minimum values.  See what happens.  If it fixes the lag, then you know something is wrong with your hardware.  If it still lags with low settings, then it's probably a software problem.

Check your temps when gaming with rivatuner/everest/speedfan etc.

My temps are average for my card when in-game, and I'll give the minimum settings a shot right now, will post results.

Good news, for now. I failed to mention that I had just got done re-seating my RAM and cleaning my 7600GT fan.
Seems like it fixed the problem, but the temps are barely lower, by 1-2C.

Please leave thread open, in case the problem returns!
Thanks everyone.
