I'm having major lag with CS3 in Vista. I have 2GB RAM, a 8400 NVIDIA, 2GHz Processor. When I run PS I get around 10% CPU usage, and 100-200MB RAM consumption.
I know for a fact that this is /not/ a Vista or virus problem. Every other program is working fine, and it's only PS that fucks up - badly. It takes 2/3 seconds to change layer etc.

Does anyone know a fix for this? It's not a printer problem, and I've tried disabling visual themes and running it in XP compatibility mode.

Toss the preferances first. And restart.
Are you running a scratch disk or is PS using the main drive for that? A separate (or partioned) scratch disk is usually best. Maybe too many fonts? I had that once on my first PC years ago, before getting a font manager. Might want to check Adobes web pages see if they have any issues with a similar set up. I use a mac now so I can't say if it is vista or not. But I have had that problem before as well on both platforms. My case was fonts and no scratch disk. Good luck.

Your specs aren't fantastic, so that is most likely the reason. Photoshop CS3 is a resource hungry app, and your computer isn't the best. Try adding another 1-2 gb of ram, that should definately help.

I've had it installed once before, and last time it worked a lot faster than it does now. I understand my comp isn't the best, but it should not take 3/4 seconds to change the bloody layer.
I have one partition only - and I've seen that I'm not the only person with this problem, but I can't find a solution anywhere. I've been messing around with the preferences and it's made no difference. Adobe are probably not going to be helpful to me until I give them a serial number .... which I do not have.
This has run once before, and has stopped for some reason. It's neither the comp, nor Vista, it has to be something wrong with either the way I'm running it, the preferences or something like that.

I ran it on my crappy XP laptop (1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, 128MB X300) 20x this speed.

edit: If it were a performance problem, how do you explain the small RAM usage (only one fourth of my RAM, with Vista using 300MB or so and PS using 200MB) and the low CPU usage (10%)

Well... that is one of the benifits of buying the program! Plus I write it off anyway.

Are you working with high rez images or just low rez/web images? My home mac is an old one and is about the same as yours (Only 1Ghz though), video and ram are equal. It does run slow... but not at 10% CPU and all that, and I work with high rez print images. BUT my point is go to adobe or other type of forums and look about, no reason to have to call support or give a Serial numb. Not passing the buck but I assure you someone else has a workaround for this, you just have to find that forum. Try http://www.prepressforums.com/forum/photoshop/ lot of tech info in that area, but much may be mac-ish (and do not mention illegal software, adobe uses this forum sometimes- I think).

Most likely you should do a re-install of PS and see if your okay. Make sure nothing else is running but PS if you can. I'm sure you know that, just thinking out loud. If I come across anything at Print/design forums I will post a link. Sorry I couldn't be more help at this time, but work calls.

If you do not use a font manager I seriously suggest using one, even if it is not your fonts you may want to look at  http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX  , great program and it is free! Full version, really free! We ditched Suitcase at work and I use it at home now too (gave up on suitcase altogether).

I was working on a 400x150px image for a website
I'll just reinstall and see if that works.

Photoshop takes a while to fully load for me also - it appears as if it has crashed but then eventually loads. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of CPU/RAM for me, and entirely probable the same for you.

The loading time is really quick. Doing anything besides working on the images is fast too.
Fucking weird.

The first thing I can tell you is to switch to CS2 or 7 (assuming you have either) while Adobe makes some adjustments. There's no reason it should be running that slow even on your rig. If you're working on web images, there's no reason older versions shouldn't work just fine.

Edit: The second thing would be to analyze this link.

Edit 2: In hindsight, reverse that order.

Turns out all I needed was a good defrag. I left the computer on all night for two nights in a row and now it's working fast. The ironic thing is that was a solution on a website, but I thought it was silly, so I decided against it, and ended up doing it by mistake.

Yeah, I have CS2 on Vista running no problem.  Plus, I know CS2 better, so I decided to just stick w/ it.
