we're doing acids and bases in chem and just did a titration lab, but one of the questions on the analysis is kinda odd.

Most shampoos are basic.  Why do some people rinse their hair with vinegar after washing it?
lolwut? i'm assuming it is because acid (vinegar) + base (shampoo) creates a salt, but why is that a good thing? is salt good for your hair?

<Jenspm> People fucking do that?

to answer ze question: Acid + Base = Neutral = good.

They might rinse their hair with vinegar afterwards to neutralize the base since it's possible that the shampoo could damage their hair.

The idea of it is to remove any soap residue or dandruff by neutralising the alkaline ph of soap (soap is alkaline and vinegar is acid). It is supposed to make your hair really shiny. What you do is mix a small amount of vinegar, perhaps 1/4 of a cup into a basin of water and rinse, and it is supposed to be done after every shampoo.

But it may make your hair very dry and tangly, I wouldnt recommend it.

put it in terms of chemistry, anyone?

The acetic acid(CH3COOH) in vinegar neutralizes the basic property of the shampoo. Thus makes the shampoo less painful when exposed to the eye.

Nerdy enough for you?

Only in your world do the Pythagorean theorem, shampoo and chemicals relate to each other.

so why would they put vinegar in their hair after the point in which you wash the shampoo out of your eyes?

This is news to me...
Vinegar removes scaly build-up and residue from hair shafts   and closes the cuticles.   Since residue coats the hair causing it to look dull, removing residue gives your hair more shine.  By closing the cuticles, the hair slides more easily and there will be fewer tangles.   Vinegar has a tonic action that promotes blood circulation in the small capillaries that irrigate the skin.
