My opty 170 just died. The years of abuse must have finally caught up to me.

Now I need a new HTPC. My Case/PSU/sound card/HDD... is still ok, so I only need a new CPU, mobo, ram and cooler

I calculated everything and it seems an AMD system is slightly cheaper for a comparable intel rig.

I've looked at getting a
  • AMD AM2 4800+ (G2) 65W TDP - should be fast enough to play 1080p h.264 easily. Should undervolt nicely. No OC planned as of yet.
  • M3A-H/HDMI - features a 780G chipset. It includes pretty good integrated graphics with blu-ray decode offloading support. HDMI port. HDCP if I ever get a blu-ray drive. Should be good enough for all HTPC needs. Passively cooled so it's noiseless.
  • cheapest 2GB DDR2-800 I can find
  • Scythe Katana 2 - cheapest decent and silentish cooler around here. Anything cheaper and I'll have a standard boxed cooler clone. I'll probs replace the fan with a slipstream I have lying around.

for sound I'll use my X-fi

sounds good?

I have a AM2 4800+ (Brisbane), and it's decently fast. I have it OC'ed to 2.95GHz.

I would say stear clear of Scythe products, but do as you will.

Any X2 should be fine, combined with a Asus M3N-HD/HDMI which costs less than the M3H and if you got money to spare, get a Tr120 without a fan. won't need it unless your gonna do msome heavy gaming (Crysis/WiC) on it.

yeah, why? They are a pretty decent make. I'm trying to cheaply and silently cool an undervolted X2 not an OC'ed Pentium D

this is not for gaming. Just HTPC and a basic file and FTP server

Yes so why a 4800x2 when a 3800x2 will do?

1080p h264 playback takes a lot of horsepower. I needed my opty to run at least 2.4GHz to get stutter free playback. Overclocking in a 24/7 silent system is not exactly a good idea. The 4800+ is not much more expensive than the lower end models. And I hear the G2 revision undervolts nicely

Bad experiences with the Ninja (horrible cooler). I'd have to only assume all of their products are made with the same quality, though I can't be sure.

By the way... Opty 170 keychain? xD

Not available here yet. Same stepping as the one I'm getting. I hear that one should be pretty simple to undervolt.

Or you could just buy Opty 144 for 20€ and OC it to 2.8-3GHz with almost stock volts

You probably want more power than that though, so ignore this post

I think that my opty is to blame but I can't be really sure since I don't have another 939 chip lying around. The machine won't post and gives me a "Ram not found" error. Ram tested in another machine and everything seems all right with it. I just presume that the CPU is dead. Not really surprising if you look at the kind of volts I had flowing though it (1.6V @ 3.2GHz).

Sounds more like a bad mobo, with a dead CPU, it just tends to happen nothing at all.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
