At the risk of sounding smug I can assure you that whatever band your into chances are the following band has been around longer, sold more concert tickets and records and created more musicians than whatever band your into.
Here is a sampling of their genius from a lyrical anaysis point of view;
When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society
Here they touch upon the reality that each pocket of life is largely oblivious to the other life forms sharing the Earth. The creatures of the tide pools know no other reality.
A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea...
Here we see that by observing the tiny little societies we see a reflection of our own. We scurry about on our little missions, like krill eating plankton, looking to the azure sky and wondering if we are all that there is, oblivious to the life surrounding us, in the air we breath.
Wheels within wheels
In a spiral array
A pattern so grand
And complex
Time after time
We lose sight of the way
Our causes cant see
Their effects
So often we go about our own business, clueless to the effects our actions, or inactions have on our fellow creatures. Not knowing we are part of nature, looking to the animal and plant life and calling that nature. Any creation of man is nature. Even war and pollution. Our causes cant see their effects.

A quantum leap forward
In time and in space
The universe learned to expand
In 1978 when quantum mechanics theories were just getting legs my beloved mentors accurately and poetically described how the universe or reality responds to our observations.
The mess and the magic
Triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world, out of hand
DNA databases, genetic engineering, synthetic chemicals, nano technology...
Computerized clinic
For superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band
American Idol and the ilk...voting boths, election shenanigans and shitty choices at election times that we tollerate.
In their own image
Their world is fashioned ---
No wonder they dont understand
We cannot see we are the main source of our own angst.
Science, like nature
Must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely serve us well
Atom bombs, biowarfare, untold horrors. DNA databases, genetic engineering, synthetic chemicals, nano technology... It must be tamed, encouraged, fostered and protected. For where would we be without it. What if the Dark Ages had never ended. Why where they dark? Because science was muzzled. And knowledge. Books were largely forbidden.
Art as expression ---
Not as market campaigns
Will still capture our imaginations
Given the same
State of integrity
It will surely help us along
This basically says that art is as meaningful as a fart in the wind. Both help us along and fill the time.
Wave after wave
Will flow with the tide
And bury the world as it does
Tide after tide
Will flow and recede
Leaving life to go on
As it was...
Pretty much sums up life, doesn't it?
