I know these are old processor but my friend has this old eMachines that he is using for a WoW server and it has a 2.8GHz Celly in it and I'm wondering if a 2.2GHz Pentium 4 I have would be better.

The ghz may be higher but celerons are really bad processors imo other than for laptops.  eMachines are even worse.  Gateway.....*shudders*

They have less cache, other than that i don't see any difference.

A lot less cache.  At least p4's had the MT ability.

So you disagree that Celeron 2.8>P4 2.2?

Hmm...depends on the cache really.  Probably won't make much of a difference though.

I would find out if what type of CPU the mobo can support before buying an upgrade. You may find it (the mobo) only supports the 512Kb cache P-4 CPU's (Norwood, etc) and not the 1MB cache P-4 CPU's (Prescotts, etc)

I've used 5-6 different eMachines, and they all have worked fine. They're pretty good PC's if you just want a cheap pre-built. They don't use propriety hardware like Dell and such.

It depends on the P4 and Celeron. If the Celly is a Willamette - which it isn't - any newer P4 would be better. But seeing how both of them is either a Northwood or Prescott, I'd stick to the Celeron.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The P4 is definitely a Northwood. The Celeron is either a Northwood or a Prescott. I'd stick to the Celeron as well

Checked the specs the celly has a 128KB L2 and the P4 has a 512KB L2

Which is the better choice now?

I couldn't tell if you guys were sayin that the Celly is better overall or whichever has the most cache is better.  But yeah I guess I did now.

That doesn't mean P4 is better. If the difference in frequency would be minimal between these two, the one with more cache wins but here Celly wins.

It really depends on the application. If it's something cache-intensive (Like SuperPI), they're probably pretty even, despite the 600MHz speed difference. But in some less cache-intensive application, the Celeron will win because of that 600MHz difference.

Why is that though?

Does frequency matter more than cache on a WoW server?

This Celly is a Northwood btw according to Wikipedia

Mount the P4, run some benchmark in the server software and find out.
